2005 (54) 2.5 v6 diesel

Featured Replies

Someone talk to me about these, currently got a A5 Octavia 1.9tdi, fed up with it, was gonna buy a landy disco bit spotted this!

Black in colour, black interior!

All the toys inside, 6spd box,

Few warning lights on, airbag light & traction control light!

No tax or Mot, however I'm not fussed as my mate will sort it for me!

Mileage is 136k!

Used to have a 55 plate taxi 1.9tdi, abit sluggish but amazing inside comfort wise!

Checked my insurance & I'm gonna be an extra £350 a year which isn't to bad considering my age & the jump up on size of car!

Can someone list a few things:

Common faults?

Timing belt/chain?

Running cost? Mpg? Not that I'm too fussed as I don't use it that often?

Tax 6/12 months?

Anything else I should consider when buying?

Thanks in advance for replying!

Timing belt is every 80k.

I'd want to know what the warning lights are caused by, pumps are problematic as are engine ecus and both are over a grand each.

Oil leaks are common from cam covers and the crankcase breather in the middle of the V.

Most common trouble is caused by the pollen filter seal leaking water into the car and the plenum drains blocking and also letting water into the car. Look for water under the passenger side carpet. Probably the most common symptom of water ingress is the front interior courtesy lights not working. My 2.5TDi does about 47 - 48 mpg on the motorway (indicated ~52 on the trip computer) where it does nearly all its miles. Cam belts are quite a big job every 80k miles or 4 years and will cost (from memory) about £600 to change including the water pump. I would recommend at V6 TDi overall as long as the common issues are sorted.

Checked all electrics & as you've said the front lights ain't working! Is it an easy fox?

Lights issue usually seems to be corrosion in the wiring loom under the front and rear passenger side, however the CCM (convenience contol module?) could be knackered which is also under the passenger side carpet.

There is a sticky thread on here detailing how to fix the issue, also has been well documented in numerous threadss.

My lights have just packed up for a second time, but this is because I managed to spill a botter of water in the passenger side foot well :/

2.5 also has the bigger front brake discs, when I changed all pads and discs my self think the cost came to about £180 - £200 for the parts.

Superb also likes to chew through tyres pretty quickly, I got 10K out of a really nast cheap set of tyres, had better results with better brand tyres.

Make sure CV joints arent clicking on full lock as well, also another common problem.

I think road tax costs cut off to newer prices for march 06 onwards cars, so you will be looking at 235 ish for a year, and sligtly more than half for 6 months.

Worth checking as well, only because ive had such a ballache with it, is that all the door locks function correctly. Ive got mine in the garage at the moment as a rear door seized shut, not cheap to fix :'(

Other than that, its a nice car to drive, just need to keep on top of the common issues.

Take the seat out, lift the carpet (not an easy job it's in one huge piece and is about 25mm thick!) check for water ingress from the pollen filter seal/plenum chamber, then look for corroded joints in the wiring harness and fix them. This is the single most common fault on tnese cars, mine has the fault even though it has never had water in the footwell. If the footwell is/has been flooded look carefully for damage to the computer module that's stupidly put down there.

Getting great info here guys, appreciate it!

If for talkings sake, the CCM needs replaced, how much are we looking at to replace?

The price of the car is just shy of 1500, now I'm buying it expecting to do work on it, first thing I'd do is the belts as it's what I always do when buying 2nd hand cars that I don't know any history of!

Make sure it fires up nicely from stone cold or else you will be looking at a set of glow plugs and (as I found it the hard way) due to poor design

and no application of copper slip on the threads on the engine production line a few years on are complete b@5T@Rdz to remove and they tend to snap or strip threads

and then it is a new head job. Very hard to get recon heads, and new ones from Skoda are £2000+VAT each. Plus fitting.

So beware.

Oh and make sure if it has had a new timing belt that the water pump was changed too!! They tend to seize and strip the timing belt. This applies to 1.9 tdi too BTW.
