I am driving Fabia 1.2TSI 105, and I can tell you that HTP and TSI are different worlds. The elasticity and acceleration of TSI is centuries ahead of the HTP. Also the TSI is much quieter and generally better balanced due to its 4 cylinder configuration, it produces way less vibrations. But there are a bit higher maintenance costs, it is equipped with a turbo, then comes the other stuff, direct injection which can be sensitive on bad fuel.

" different worlds" ..."centuries ahead"...Steady on mate. Yes it is a more sophisticated engine but the little HTP does have a place here. It is a cracking little engine will cruise easily on the motorway, whilst nippy around town it's cheap to buy and has no cambelt issues. So whilst, as I have said, the Tsi is better in many ways the HTP will still be the better option for some.

had the engine chromed and air brushed will show it off this year with this club i hope gaydon is on this year looks a great place not to a big show by going by the photos

thanks again mate

Haven`t been in the HTP version but the TSi can sound rather throaty when you give it some welly. Sounds like a baby 911 or Subaru. The 105 version goes like it has no right to as well!

I think to be honest, the HTP version is great for those of us who can't afford a TSi :giggle: But I do love the little HTP, it's fun and frugal if you consider it's low insurance and cheap servicing. The engine note too is nice in my opinion as three cyl.s tend to be, though it can be vocal under accelleration. But the TSi 105 would be the one for me and might still be in a year or two's time.

TSI has no cambelt, it is chain driven which VW states it is maintenance free.

Regards to the HTP, it is good engine which is even more improved by the great gear ratios which give it its kick in 1st, 2nd and maybe 3rd gear, but thats where the magic stops, and it is proven during many years and customers. The TSI needs to be proved yet.

if keeping the car out of warranty i would prefer the 'Sleep easy' factors of the HTP, no supercharger, no turdocharger, less sensitve fuel system etc etc

if only keeping the car within warranty then i would go TSi if i could afford the extra money, as they do refinement and fuel economy better than the HTP and feel quite brisk given the bhp output

I have to be honest, not too sure why the 86ps TSi hasnt replaced the HTP entirely. Not only does it go better and is more refined, as far as I can tell its easily as economical and cleaner to boot.

Sadly the HTP's have been somewhat left behind by the newer TSi tech; certainly not to say they are a bad engine though. Think they are ideal for 1st time drivers or those not unduely bothered by lack of performance, they are also a very cheap way into a new Fabia.

1.2lt 3cylinder HTP engine.....Had a Roomster with this as a courtesy car....well impressed for the size......handled pretty well on the back roads....very good for those on a tight budget, young age etc. If you don't have those worries then TSI is the way to go forwards by going backwards??? Well it does only have 2v per cylinder!!! But thats all tied up in the advantages of direct injection!!! B)

VW is going to unveil the new 1.0 TSI with 50 and 55kW in the 2012. and that engine is supposed to replace the slowly aging HTP, i think that they are going to make the 1.0TSI out of 1.2TSI by removing one cylinder, like they did with the 1.6TDI CR(1.2TDI CR deriving from 1.6 with one pot less). My guess is we will first see 1.0TSI in new Škoda small city car planned for the 2012.

This is all part of the VWs strategy to disband all atmospheric engines in its offer by 2012.

if keeping the car out of warranty i would prefer the 'Sleep easy' factors of the HTP, no supercharger, no turdocharger, less sensitve fuel system etc etc

The 1.2 TSI doesn't have a supercharger, just a light pressure, low inertia turbo thats upto full torque by 1550rpm.

Cheers
