MAF sensor

Featured Replies

hey guys,

just would like your opinions on a few things, what exactly is the role of thhe MAF sensor? does it calculate the amount of air being taken in and sets the fuel amount accordingly? can forcing in extra air cause any damage?

what effect if any does increased air flow have on economy? does having more air in the cylinder cause any harm or will the ecu only let in so much anyway?

thanks, jordan

Hi

Yes the MAF reads the air going through

The lets the ECU know

Then the fuelling is adjusted to suit

If the air flow is increased , then the MAF will pick up on that , let the ECU know , so then the fuelling will adjust to the air

Hope that helps?

Sarah

As long as the increased air is in the range of the MAF, scaling has its limits and we seem to be getting to the upper limits on current hybrids now.

No risk of passing these limits on the standard turbo?

everything is governed by the ECU orbeit the map. increasing flow with a better air filter, etc is NOT forcing more air into the engine. The engine sucks it's own air in. the turbo forces air if anything.

there are tolerances and parameters within the map that allow for slight changes. i.e. lower intake temps from better intercoolers that allow the map to adjust slightly (so may result in slight increase in boost pressure). Of course it does help to get the map tweaked for all the mods you've done.

But as for mods, unless you're doing something serious, i.e. injectors or turbo. I wouldn't worry about it and enjoy the benefits.

As for the MAF (Mass Air Flow), it does exactly just that. It measures air flow through the intake.

I'm not sure what it is on the Fabia, but it's probably a hotwire type. So there is a tiny piece of wire that gets hot, as intake air passes over it, the wire cools down. the engine management system does a calculation based on how cold it gets to determine how much air is getting into the engine.

you can often buy the sensors seperate from the housings, but you need to make sure it's an identical match (i.e. part number), as they are calibrated according to the maf housing size.
