Rattle from handbrake

Featured Replies

My other half's car (53 plate Mk I Octavia elegance) has developed an annoyingly loud rattle. I've eventually traced this to the handbrake, or at least the silver release knob on the end of it. If I put a finger on the release button and push it gently to the side silence is restored. Has anyone else suffered this, or have any bright ideas how to resolve it? Does it need more than a squirt of WD40, or is there some way to take it apart and tighten something?

Many thanks!

the silver release knob

I am similarly annoyed and would be very interested if there is a fix. The best idea I've come up with would be to weight it in some way, perhaps with some (large?) heat-shrink tubing but I'm not sure if it would get in the way of the button mechanism.

ive had this problem on 3 cars from mk4 golf platform now and generally just turn up the stereo and bash the button when it happens till it goes away sure I remember a topic with a proper fix though when i get round to fixing my cables will hunt it out unless some kind person comes along and reminds me

Drives me mad too! I had some electrical/insulating tape on mine for a while as a temporary bodge. It got rid of the vibration but made the button a bit of a tight fit in the handle.
