Speedo intermittent fault now permanent!

Featured Replies

Hi All

A number of times over the last year I have had my speedo momentarily stop working, literally only for a second or so. It then returns to normal function, but when it stops it triggers off power steering, ASR and other lights/beeps.

I had previoulsy assumed that this may just be one of the wheel hub sensors, but this fault has now become permanent (on way to work this morning!) and I now have no speedo operation with power steering and ASR warning lights on.

With the fact that the speedo is not working at all, I have realised that it is likely to be a fault with the vehicle speed sensor.

Anyone know......

Is the sensor on gearbox? Is it a common fault/failure of the sensor or is it likely to just be corrosion on contacts or similar? How much would a new sensor be if needed??

(I know that engine has been previously 'deep-cleaned'/de-greased a few years ago so am guessing that this may have caused some moisture ingress to the sensor).

Any thoughts/comments appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

Well, left work today and all is working again, seems the intermittent fault is still intermittent but just lasts longer when it occurs!!

Got the car up on the ramps when I got home and had a good look over the gearbox to locate the speed sensor....

Found what i thought was the speedo sensor (front upper side of gearbox directly under the battery) checked connector, terminals, removed sensor and all looked ok. Noticed that the sensor had a depressible dimple on the end after the threaded portion and now that I have refitted it am guessing that maybe this was the reversing sensor that I removed??!

Speedo is still working (for now) and looking all over gearbox from underneath i couldn't see anything else that could be the speedo sensor, can anyone confirm exact location or if it was the right sensor that i removed??

Thanks

Anyone able to shed on light on exact location of vehicle speedo sensor on gearbox??

Would really appreciate knowing if (as per post above) i got the right or wrong sensor out last time - if it goes funny again, I will at least know then where to look!

Cheers

Andy
