Have you had a small boost leak?

Featured Replies

Ello.

My cars been making a funny noise and I don't like it at all.

It's only when cold,.. it's not a long noise, just a short whistle like it's got a lisp.. actually.. it sounds allot like the old guy on Family Guy that likes Chris a bit too much..

It happens between 15-1600prm on the 1st little bit of acceleration and then again if you lift off.. It's not there on idle or when cruising..

It has a very slight metallic sounding edge to it..

.. Cars running better than ever.. no light, very willing, in fact it feels the best it ever had at the minute.

Does this sound like a small boost leak somewhere on the pipe work / ic / egr or is it more turbo-ish sounding?

My boost leaks don't sound metallic from how I'd describe, it sounds like my fan-belt has gone and just sort of whistles, you can alter the noise by giving it a little more boost etc... You can always unclip a hose and see if the noise continues, it should sound like a wooosh when it spools up. :giggle:

So a boost leak sounds like a whistle? When I'm sitting at idle there's a high pitched whistle noise but it pauses when you rev then it's back once the revs drop

The turbo isn't spooling at idle (or at least not very much) so wouldn't be a boost leak then, I think I know the noise you're talking about though but it's not a boost leak

A friend pointed out this to me the other week.

It's just had a full service a few weeks ago but it does make a high pitched whistle at idle.

I thought it was the turbo no?

..well, it's only ever so slightly metallic.. but everyone hears things different.

My main concern was when it likes to happen, it's only short, like half a second long.. am I wrong in thinking that it's when the turbo starts to spool if it does it at 1500rpm.. and then again when I lift off? Also, because it's only when cold..

I did wonder if it was something just scrapping on something else as the torque makes the engine move back and fouth.... o,o,o,o,o, wait.. isn't the gearbox mount meant to make a scrappy noise when it needs oiling?? Scrapes and whistles can sounds pretty similar.

And actually, as the engine / gearbox gets warm it'd soften up the rubber, wouldn't it.. making it go away..

Mine whistles at idle if you leave it for 30 seconds. Give it a blip and whistle returns on idle looked at vagcom while doing this and the egr valve appears to adjust when this whistle starts. Someone else might be able to clear up exactly what its doing but pretty sure its 2 do with that

Does it go away after the engine has warmed up?

Mine also does a little whistle, sounds exactly as you described. Not sure if it occurs when the engine is warm though, never thought to look. It's noticeable in parking structures where it echoes but I doubt it is anything to worry about.
