Is my Turbo on the way out?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

After help again ;)

I have 1.8 Octavia VRS, just short of 99,000 miles and is on a '01 plate with regular servicing. 2 days ago I noticed a noise from around engine bay whilst driving, It isn't loud and is just about noticeable with the radio on lowest volume setting. I would describe it as a rumbling noise or as the mrs said "sounds like when your on an aeroplane" and occurs whilst moving, slightly different tone when accelerating and letting off the gas. Whilst stationary there is no noise and it doesn't seem to be from any of the front wheels.

My engine light was already on(due to faulty MAF, so i've disconnected it......one on order)

Performance is the same, no lag etc but I did have a little bit of hissing from the turbo before it kicked in(Yes, I know you get that around 3000rpm, but this lasted a lot longer) but only on the one occasion.

I know my description of the fault isn't the best in the world, but i'm hoping someone has had the same sort of noise and can help out.

Thanks in advance, Mike

Moved to correct forum.

Boost leak sounds plausible from what you describe. Failed turbos tend to sound like police car sirens!

As above sounds like a boost leak. Give all the pipes a check over in the engine bay and also check the intercooler pancake pipe hoses behind the driver side front wheel and check if it's loose Before shelling out on a new turbo.

Many thanks 2 both replies. Whilst under the bonnet, was squeezing a pipe or 2 and seemed to be getting some air from it, but was hard to tell with fans so close. Will check those pipes Sunday in daylight, before shelling out for anything.
