1.3 Mpi coil pack

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, back again after some relatively trouble free winter motoring in the trusty rusty :giggle:

Todays question....my felly seems pretty sluggish on the throttle. Had new plugs (NGK fine electrode, as per their catalogue for my lump) around 4 months ago, and has run well since, Until now... I'm suspecting the coil is packing in, but how do i test it? seems to be fine at high(er) speeds, but really laboured in 1, 2 and 3, especially after braking to a stop. Have checked the brakes for seizure, they seem to be moving freely enough.. any ideas?

I think substitution is the easiest test really, hard to do anything else with that the way that it mounts to the engine...

Thanks for that, had kinda figured that would be the case....bit pricey for investigative purposes though! MOt due in a few weeks, will hang fire till then and see what she needs to stay on the roads for another year ...

If valve clearances have not been checked in a while I would start there as it's cheaper than a new coil pack :)

Yeah, as above, check all the obvious stuff - I've known a couple of people who have had coil pack problems, but they're not that common to fail, so check all the obvious (free) stuff first. Seems odd that it's OK in higher gears but not in low...

valve clearances could do with being done, she is pretty noisy....will get the feelers out at the weekend and see how that goes. probs due an oil change too, so will do that while i'm on. snow permitting.

well, at least you know the engine will be cold when you do the clearances...

mine had similar problem - was a very blocked fuel filter, fitted a new one and back came the performance !!

Never got the chance to find out :'(

Timing chain slipped, and the phrase "uneconomical repair" came to mind. She left us yesterday hauled away on an ambulance, £170 wasnt a bad return for a quick sale on ebay tho. Lessons learned, will know for next time, would have another one, if i can find one as good!

Thanks for the help and crack guys, hopefully will be back some day! B)
