window won't shut

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

got in the car last night to go home – dropped the front windows so I could wipe the rain drops off the door mirrors and see to reverse – put both windows up again – not. :(

Passenger window behaved itself but driver’s window stopped three quarters up. Tried again – and again –each time it went down OK but would click and then stop in the same place going up, leaving an opening of about 5 inches. :S

Luckily wasn’t raining.

It’s not garaged at night, so once home I ‘manually’ raised the window all the way. It’s stayed up so far.

A mechanic friend-of-a-friend-of-an-acquaintance reckons the regulator is bust – a new one needed with about 90 mins labour – total cost something around £200. :o

Does this sound right? As I’ve not tackled this type of job before and would need to work outside in this weather, I don’t intend to attempt it myself – but is it really going to cost that much?

any suggestions gratefully received

What happens now you got it to close? If it's still stopping in the same place, it could just be an issue with the controller, which can be reset by pulling the fuse or disconnecting the battery. If not, there aren't many other options than the regulator but AIUI, that usually means the window doesn't go anywhere...

do some searching of this forum - maybe on the Octavia section - i seem to remember somewhere, that there is a way of re-setting the regulator?

Al.

I had the same thing happening a few months back. Got a used Passat regulator from the local scrapyeard for £20, and my local mechanic fitted it for another £20. The Front Window regulators from the Passat will fit on the Superb.

pulling the fuse might be worth a go (anyone know where it is?) - I'm just wary that if I open the window again (and pulling the fuse doesn't work) it might not stay up... :S

edit - Just had to pop out to the car at lunchtime and noticed the window had dropped about a half inch. Put it back into position OK, but it now seems to me that it’s not going to be an electrical fix

I can tell you with 100% certainty it is the Regulator. Mine is in the garage right now to get the same thing fixed. 100 for the part and 50 labour.

What will happen in your case is the next time you forget there is a problem with the window and you let it down it will continue to play up till you hear a snap !!!! Then your regulator will be done. My first Superb did this 6 yrs ago, it was the only problem it ever gave me, and my current Superb goosed it's regulator after just 1 year and has now gone for the 2nd time. Me thinks this problem is a nice little after sales earner for VAG so it was never sorted on the MK1. I havn't heard of such problems with the new model or do I stand corrected?
