funny smell

Featured Replies

ive not experianced it before but im sure my clutch is slipping badly when i put my foot down from standstill the engine just revs and there is a terrible stink from the front like burning.the octy is now at 230 bhp but i thought the cluthes were very strong in these its fine when i gun it when moving but if i over rev and let the clutch out it doesnt bite .does this mean its on the way out if so how much wil it cost :(

It's definitely on it's way out if that's what you're getting ;)

Options are to replace it or to ease up a little on dropping the clutch...

Assuming you got for easing up on it, just make sure the clutch is 'up' before dropping the accelerator to the floor so it has time to grip properly.

Not sure how strong these clutches are but Ross & friends will know that kinda stuff far better than me anyway :D

As the clutch is the std one it is not designed to handle that much power. If you take it easy istead of flooring it, you will have no problem.

get a big bad ass clutch and rag the nuts off it. best fun that way

- that involves spending a fair bit of cash though ;) True enough though, with an uprated clutch you can drive it the way you want :D

exactly, best way in all fairness. why have a car that is 'theroretically capable' of things but let down by something like a clutch, especially when you have paid a premium to get the performance potential. my clutch/flywheel was cheaper fitted than a standard item form skoda, and that is uprated/lightened/balanced.

worth all the money, especially with jabba coming soon

how much am i looking at for a performance clutch fitted and where is recomended garage wise?do jabba do such things

i think i paid

go to IP and its an APR item i think, might be the wrong way round

It's always best to balance out how much you spend. If you uprate the engine & don't do the clutch, it will probably fail at some point. And let's face it, you got that done as you like to go about your business a bit faster than standard ;)

just been down to tescos about 12miles round trip when got back still got that smell when i got out the car .i wouldnt say burning smell, a bit like scalextric cars when you were kids .i drove really careful cause i had wife and baby in car, didnt feel clutch slipping but still that smell .

Im wondering if i should take in to skoda but dont like to because of the re-map im just waiting for the bang of the clutch going.looking through the list of other peoples vrs i dont see many people uprating there clutches if any

and peope are pushing a lot more than me 230bhp.

any feed back would be apreciated as im not very mechanicaly minded  ,is the clutch allways working or is it only on gear change

Simplified it's two plates that get pushed together (very hard). Engine drives one disc, the other disc drives the gearbox.

When you press down on the pedal the clutch plates separate.

During clutch slip the plates rub past each other in a way generating a LOT of friction and thus heat, which is why it smells so bad.

When the clutch is not engaged, the discs are pressed together so hard it can 'take' the torque from the engine and transfer it through to the gearbox via the discs.

If you 'drop the clutch' when racing away, the plates might bounce and not fully 'grip' causing more chance of slipping/burning.

This IS a simplified version of the real thing, but that's kinda what it does I believe :D

Could argue therefore that in a way the clutch is working less when you press down the pedal, from a 'burning it out' perspective :)

thanks ww vrs for the reply this helps to make it a bit clearer

Give Mike at IP a call and ask for the ABD Sachs uprated clutch....doesn't have the duel mass fly wheel so spins up quicker and you, apparently, don't loose much smoothness.

Duel mass clutch is apparently for those times when drivin gin traffic...no kangarooing.

Should cost around

mine is still very smooth and idle is perfectly fine witht the new clutch/flywheel

Glad I could help a little :D
