Noisy rear brakes

Featured Replies

I have a problem with my rear brakes in that they make an awful noise when reversing and sometimes whilst going forwards. I have stopped using my hand brake which seems to have assisted a bit and now just leave it in gear. It was almost a year ago that the car failed for binding brakes and the disks, pads and calipers were replaced. It has since been back to the garage as the noise occured a few months ago. The brakes were stripped and cleaned and now the issue has returned again.

Any advice or suggestions to resolve this once and for all please?

Yeah they all do it, mine does it in reverse, there is a kit you can buy from Skoda thats ment to stop it but dont think it always works

Afraid it's a common and annoying issue, apparently due to vibration on the calipers. Skoda have brought out a mod that costs about £105 from previous posts (if you do a search for 'mooing', you should find most of the threads). Another member indicated that he was able to get modified pads from skoda with a rubber type backing, but no other members have been able to obtain them, and i don't think these were guaranteed to work. So it seems either you keep removing and cleaning out the pads and calipers, which seems to work temporarily, or you pay out over £100 on the Skoda parts. Not sure what they charge for fitting or how long it takes.

I was considering it myself, but have burnt a hole in my pocket recently buying steel rims and winter tyres, only to find we are now having quite a mild January.

I don't understand why it bothers people so much how much time does any car spend reversing? If it was when going forwards I'd understand

And yes mine Moos in reverse quite badly, as soon as I found out it was normal it doesn't bother me and I reverse park all the time

Well I am glad it does not bother you but it bl**dy drive me crazy.

First reason because Skoda should of delt with the design properly.

Secondly Skoda should of recognised it as a flaw and made a proper recall.

Thirdly mine moos permantley in reverse and yes although most of the time the car is going forward the noise is very loud and embarrasing.

I was talking to somebody with a lupo Gti today and they have same rear calipers and the pads he has on his have rattle shims where pads fit into calipers, he says they are fine altho he had to strip and clean them out cos they were sticking abit but they dont squeek

Most of the VRS rear capliers / pads have rattle shims on them as mine do , but it no ownce of difference to the dam noise.

Stripped mine down lots of times. some pad design do appear to make the noise worse but the real issue appears to be the sound resonance between the rear beam and the caliper that triggers this awful mooing.

This thread was a discussion also on the subject.

The kit appears to change that sound resonance.....go figure... :smirk:
