Phone & Symphony HU

Featured Replies

I've tried searching for this, but nothing really comes up.

The manual for my symphony head unit makes reference to a phone in, and explains that the radio can be automatically muted when a call comes in.

Is there an official phone connection that I can get, or was it an original option only?

I realise I could use a connects2, and am looking at them for connecting my MP3, however I'd like the ability to plug in both my phone and MP3 at the same time.

Its just a mute connection - most handsfree kits have a mute line, connect that to the mute/phone input for the hu and it writes "Phone" on the display and mutes the speakers.

So the call doesn't actually come through the stereo speakers then?

Get a Parrot 9200, It does it all!

At that price I may as well buy a new a new head unit!

Unfortunatly not, its litterally just a connection that mutes everything.

This is extracted from the Symphony booklet though:

PHONE

Enter this menu point if your vehicle is equipped with a telephone and modify the radio functions under this menu point to suit your telephone as in the following.

no: No telephone fitted into the vehicle.

ON: There is a telephone fitted into the vehicle. With this setting, the radio is muted when the telephone is activated by a telephone call or when dialled.

in: The built-in telephone is connected to the radio by means of a corresponding hands-free speaking unit, so that the person calling/called can be heard through the car speakers.

• Select PHONE in the menu. The display shows "PHONE” with the current value.

• Use the turning knob to set the appropriate function.

• By briefly pressing the TP button or the control button >>, you can store the indicated value and go to the next menu point.

or

• by depressing the TP button for a few moments, you can leave the set-up menu without storing this change.

PH VOL

If the telephone call is transmitted through the speakers in your vehicles, you can set the playback volume under this menu point.

• Select PH VOL in the menu. The display shows "PH VOL” with the current value.

• Use the turning knob to set the desired value from 1 to 45.

• By briefly pressing the TP button or the control button >>, you can store the indicated value and go to the next menu point

or

• by depressing the TP button for a few moments, you can leave the set-up menu without storing this change.

I have a Nokia bluetooth phone kit plumed in to my Symphony. It'll automatically switch from what ever your listening to over the phones sound, and send it out through the car speakers when hooked up right.

It'll also turn the Symphony ON when a call comes through if it's off... and also the phone will ring through the car speakers with the right kit.

It's all on fabia-vrs.com.infact, here ya go.

Can't believe I didn't see that guide.

A bit more complex that I really wanted, and I'm not even sure if a proper car kit is available for my phone anyway.

Yep, thats with the assumption that the aftermarket handsfree sends the signal through the stereo's amplifier. I'm pretty certain that none of the recent ones do that, instead the handsfree loom sits inbetween the speakers and the headunit and the handsfree kit will have its own amplifier. So all the signals from the HU are sent through the handsfree kit before being sent to the speakers so the set can mute it without any input from the HU. I found the PHONE setting on the HU only really useful for the display aspect.

So the "ON" setting will just mute everything when the handsfree kit sends the hu a signal (even though most handsfree kits will automatically mute any sounds going to the speakers during a call anyway), and i'm assuming the "In" setting refers to some form of Symphony specific handsfree set which did allow the ringing and the voice aspect to be sent through the headunits amplifier.

Hmm, I think it might be better for me to start looking at aftermarket head units with integrated bluetooth etc then.

My kit is just a generic Nokia bluetooth thing stuffed up behind he glove box and tapped into the HU's power lines so it behaves as it should.... It's supposed to have a little speaker but I hooked the speaker line into the HU's phone input. The handfree has it's own volume control so i adjusted it to not clip/distort on he HU's input. (around 60%).

Don't be put off by all the connection on the HU, you don't have to use them all... If your handsfree kit can output audio and has a lead for getting the HU's attention / muting than u can use the symphony with those 3 cables alone. The Symphony doesn't require the DATA lines to operate it's phone mode. Just the mute/call signal and a audio feed.

The mic for mine was in place when I bought the car.. (as was the kit, completely disconnected.. the owner before be didn't know how to hook it up and i'm guessing the original owner had it hooked into a 3rd party HU).. anyway, basically.. you can mount the Mic in the lil grille near the interior light switch... works quite well.. The only part of my phone kit you can see is the lil button near the steering column.
