Hi all,

just joined. I drive an Octavia estate as a private hire vehicle so I'm packing on the miles. Just put it in for an oil change, mot, and brake pads. Comes back with a quote £460 for pads, discs, c.v. gaiter. Does this sound like too much? Guess the gaiter will add an hours labour so £80 labour there, but still seems too much to me. What do you think?

Hi and welcome aboard.

If this is ALL round, then its not too bad, but would shop around, like we all have to do nowadays.

Welcome.

I changed all the discs and pads on SWMBO's MK5 Golf (same chassis as your Octavia) by shopping around I got the parts for about £120ish IIRC (Mintex), then you have £25ish for a genuine VAG CV gaiter, any competent mechanic should be able to change the lot in under 2hrs I recon,

So even if the parts came to around £200 (as they wont shop around for the parts - BUT will get them at trade prices) and they charged you 3 hrs labour they are charging roughly £85 per hour labour, this can be brought down drastically IMO.
