recent drooning noise

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a 2006 vrs. It has 40k on the clock and a full service history the last service was only about 500 miles ago.

Since this service it has developed a really annoying loud drooning noise.

It seems more from the rear rather than the front.

There appears to be no odd tyre wear, also it does not sound like transmission noise.

Does any one have any suggestions.

thanks

If the tyres are wearing evenly as you say, then it could be a wheel bearing on its way out.

do you know how much are wheel bearings are to be replaced

Swap the rear tyres with the fronts and there's a very good chance the noise will go away. The rear tyres are probably 'sawtoothing'.

My old 06 Octavia estate would start droning when the rear tyres got to about 5mm of tread, swapped with the fronts and the noise went away. Four wheel alignment should resolve the problem.

When I spoke to the dealer he told me that they had replaced a rear wheel bearing on a car only to discover the noise was coming from the tyre.

+1 on the rear tyre wear, both of my Octavias made a droning noise from the rear thanks to tyres wearing low, a change if tyres normally cures it

If it is the tyres, then go for a 4 wheel geometry setup, not a 4 wheel alignment. As the geometry setup takes into consideration the majority of the suspension details. Have the rear camber set to the revised value of 1.2 degrees of negative camber.

Theres plenty of info on this forum with regards to this issue, i myself have a droning noise but my rear suspension was set to 1.8 degrees.

Although there is some sawtoothing, its to no extent of what it was before. The insides were bald in 12k.

FWIW, mine do not really show any signs of excess wear but if you run your hand over it you can feel the "sawtoothing"

as you can se in the pic the outter and inner markers are equal, since swapping over the rears to the front the noise has gone.
