Oh yes. Stretched her legs on the way down to Basigstoke for her courtesy 1000 mile check-up. 1002 miles on the clock when I got there...

I'm gonna have to learn how to change gear in this motor. If I change at 5K the revs continue to rise almost another 1K between gears. Could be risky if I really cane it. Don't wanna be running into the 7K range on upshifts...

Question: Are you actually taking your foot off the throttle? Or is it a case of you trying to match the revs for the next gear, whilst in neutral mid-shift? If so, thats real racing style gear changing.

It's upshifts I have the problem, and I do lift. It's like there's a half second delay between loud pedal and actual go - but maybe it's just me...

could this be you changing at 6k rpm andgoing up1k while the change and it hitting the rev limiter?

That's precisely what I *don't* wanna do which is why I change at around 5 when I'm pushing.

These things have fly-by-wire throttles don't they? Maybe there's a technique I'll get that will allow me to use the full rev-range under power without thrashing the motor on the upshifts.

Not a problem I've come across in my 14 years behind various wheels.

Go on - that's what the rev limiter's for!

Be quicker taking your foot off the throttle when you hit the clutch and you will avoid the revs going up too high.

Well done Mark. You'll think its quick Now but as the engine loosens up as the miles pile on it will feel quicker daily till about 10k miles.

still for now keep an eye on the oil level to get a feel for how much you are using, mine used about a litre in the first 10k miles, but since then I have not needed to top it up at all. I am sure you will still be :D this time next year.

Mine's just hit 2k - in 2 weeks ! The dealer said there was no need to run in, but I did take it a bit easier - and it does seem a little faster now ! ;)

Get yerself an automatic, then you don't have to worry about rev limiters and gear changes :D

Dave, be wary of running the car on the limiter. A "friend" ( ;) ) told me that if you hold it on the limiter for more than about 3-5 seconds the check engine light comes on and a code is written to the ECU. Can't remember what "he" said the code was but when translated it comes out as "maximum engine revs exceeded (WARANTY VOID)". Just as well this "friend" had a VAG-COM unit and could remove all evidence of this code ever having been there :D

Mark I wouldn't worry too much about getting that code, only a lunatic like my "friend" would hold a car bouncing off the limiter for more than 3 seconds :D

i had this happen on my car when i first got it. i had the service guy check the reponse times when it went in for its first service. my throttle would take a little time from pressing the pedal before you felt any acceleration and the same small delay when you took your foot off to change gear. it was a lot better after the service so i can only presume that "something" was change to match the movement of the pedal to what actually happened.

I asked my dealer about running the car in and he said 'don't worry about it, just give it a bit of stick'!!

That's one bit of advice I think I'll be ignoring... until it's run in ;-)

Which dealer was that?

It amazes me the advice people get given sometimes. Having said that though, modern engines alledgedly don't need running in. I was taking no chances as I reckon its a myth about running in not being required. I hink its al to do with our increasingly disposable society.

I was quite surprised about that advice as well. I know other people who have bought new cars and they've all been told to run them in for 500-600 miles.

Some cars get an oil change at 1000 miles as well. From what I understand (from reading the threads on this board) the first time my car will get an 'official' oil-change is at the ~20,000 mile service. That seems a long way to go!!

Have the wise people of Briskoda got any advice about running in?

Rather than wait for the other 486 members to each have their say, try reading Driving Tips - the first 1000 miles - and after in the Owner's Manual on page 108. Good advice and well worth reading.

I say do what it says in the manual. Don't hammer it and stay below 3/4 max revs for first 500 miles, gradually increase over next 500, job done :)

The manual gives fairly good instructions.

I was carefull for the first 1000 miles, not exceeding 4k rpm. Yes I did give it ful throttle and didn't labour the engine ie trying to get it to pull from 1000 rpm in 5th

96,000 miles on and its still running fine

mark is thiis mainly 2-3 3-4... my car also does this? i assumed it was a foible of the drive by wire? if you do fix it let me know what they did?
