Tuning a TDI 90bhp Octavia Mk1

Featured Replies

Hey guys

Im a newbie on here and looking at buying a Mk 1 Octavia Estate TDI 90bhp and I am trying to work out how tunable it is as I dont know much about the engine. Are they PD diesels or if I want to tune it, do I need to chip it rather than remap it? Any suggests on good places to go to get it tuned, preferably around Scotland would be MUCH appreciated!?

I am hoping to look at it tomorrow so it would be great to get some feedback asap. I take it that I would be looking at getting about 115bhp out of it?

Many thanks

Tim

Welcome to Briskoda,

If you have a look further down the Forum front page to the Site sponser section, click on the one that says Shark performance, they do a tune at home service which might be what you need.

Hiya. Remapping a TDi90 should see you on about 120bhp, with no other work needed. Whereabouts in Scotland are you? My location varies, hence the vagueness.

Thanks for the replies guys. I take it that the engine in the 90bhp TDI's is not a PD engine so it will have to be a chip rather than a remap?? Any good firms to get it from? I have PM'd the guys you recommended so I will see what they come back with.

Cheers

Tim

You can remap any of the Octavia 1.9D engines, even the non-turbo one.

I'd trust Shark, but ISTR they're based in Nottingham, so it would be a long hike for them coming up here. Hence the query about where you are (town or district/county will do).

Sorry mate, yeah I am in Edinburgh area but do a fair bit of travelling around with work. I will see what Shark say in there reply. I havent bought the car yet but I am keen as I have a few drives over to the continent to come so it would give me good mpg. It has 140,000 on it but FSH so im hoping that I dont need to worry.

Cheers

Embra - That's easy; go to Star Performance in Kirkaldy. Oh and 140k is nothing to these cars; I know of some taxis that have done more like 500k with just servicing.

Cool thanks Ken

They only fitted 1 pd engine to the mk1 octavia range and that was the pd130, don't be hung up on the pd technology though, the tdi90 is still a fantastic engine, my parents had one for a couple of years and used to commute to their house in France 6-7 times per year at a rough 1500-2000miles per trip

From reading everyones comments on here and a very in depth conversation with Ben @ Shark Performance I have just bought a remap from him :)

I had a quote for a remap today from an established local company who have changed their name recently from ChippedUK, and I'd like opinions please;

I have a TDI 90 ALH motor; and I asked for the 'economic' map. The remapper reckons he can get an extra 35hp, 70Nm .... for £350 inc VAT :o

I reckon estimates and price are wildly optimistic ... what do you think?

TBH i run a TDi 90 estate and its surprisingly nippy. i was going to remap her but decided it wasnt worth it. dropped it on coilovers instead but even they were only £140 delivered.

I have to disagree, my TDI 90 estate is a slug.

I feel it would be MUCH easier to drive with a bit more zip, not sure if a tuning box is better value for money than a £350 remap.

After all these earlier engines are not as sensitive as the later ones and are less likey to throw warning lights?

Took my TDI 90hp Octavia estate for a trip to P-Torque in Wombourne today for a remap.

The 90hp felt slower than my old Fabia SDI in real terms, and after a few hairy moments in Snowdonia this weekend it was a cse of more power or new car.

A remap is a whole lot cheaper than buying another car !

Will had the car on the rolling road, and the figures speak for themselves;

Before:

At the engine - 97.2hp (72.4Kw) @ 4152rpm / 152.3lb/ft (206.4Nm)@ 2830rpm

At the wheels - 84hp

After:

At the engine - 122.9hp (91.6Kw) @ 3700rpm / 210.8lb/ft (285.8Nm)@ 2830rpm

At the wheels - 112.9hp

All done very efficiently and professionally, the car is now MUCH stronger and smoother than before.

Thanks Will

Something not right there; peak torque on a standard diesel engine is at 1800 to 1900 (depending on tune).

122.9hp is more than 30% over standard. Most insurance companies either won't insure or want big money.

How much of a percentage increase did you have to pay?

The 90TDI engine is not PD as stated above, however some of them are remappable rather than having to fit a chip, it depends on the ECU that's fitted to the car. Many UK post-2000 cars have the EDC15 ECU fitted which is remappable, however the earlier ones were MSA15 and needed to be chipped.

2830rpm was certainly peak torque, I watched the whole process ... the standard map put out max torque at the same rpm.

rwbaldwin - you need to change the batteries in your calculator, 97.2hp as standard (proved by rolling road) +30% = 126.4hp

The insurance companies will use 90 as the baseline - not what each individual car actually produces

My insurers have a copy of the rolling road figures, the underwriters asked for a premium which was very acceptable.
