Help! Central locking problem.

Featured Replies

Good afternoon, all. I come to you in times of need!

After having a few months of problem free motoring with my Mk1 vRS, it's now developed it's first fault. I locked the car and walked away, hearing that the locks had engaged.

Several hours later, I look and find the interior light to be on, and hear all of the doors, and boot, continuously attempting to lock / unlock.

When my key fob proved unresponse, I used the spare. No joy. Get in the car, key in ignition, use the buttons on the drivers arm rest. After much fettling, I get some response and the car would lock, then repeat in a similar manner.

Now I've managed to get it locked, it's staying that way. Could someone inform me as to what to expect the source of the issue to be? I've searched, but everyone seems to blame contacts for central locking problems. I fear this may be a more serious issue.

I don't actually have a VAGCOM, so I'll have to wait until Monday to get my mechanic on the case, but if anyone has experienced similar behaviour, I'd appreciate any advice..

Cheers,

Keith.

Its going to be water ingress into somewhere i'd expect, either the drivers door wiring or the connection point behind the left hand rear boot carpet where the screen washer pipe connects.

Thanks for the reply. :)

I've been out to see about how damp the carpets are. The rear passenger mats seemed damp, but water has definitely made it's way into the boot, moreso on the left hand side.

The car had also unlocked itself again! Grr.. Is there anything electrically specific on that side of the boot which would bring this about? Need to get this rectified A-SAP.

I hope the fault flags up on VAGCOM..

As it happens, the hose had popped off in the boot. The connector blocks were completely soaked. I popped them back together and applied some superglue to prevent it happening again.

However, yesterday the rear wiper wouldn't work. Today, all is well! I can only assume that the contacts within the connector blocks need cleaning up with a toothbrush and WD.

Over the last few weeks, I've noticed the brake lights need more force on the pedal for them to come on. Could this be a sign of corroded contacts, or would it more likely be the pressure sensor on the pedal itself?

Next challenge, sort the passenger side window. The motor spins away, but nothing happens, window doesn't budge more than a few mm. Any words of wisdom? :)

as for the brake lights there is a switch under pedal push in a twist at the same time and it should adjust the switch if not replace it from your local motor spares will cost £12ish
