Losing faith in my VRS/flat spots

Featured Replies

When I first got my octavia VRS (8 months ago) I was in love, however I am quickly losing my faith and thinking of getting rid of it.

I have an 02 plate with 100k on it and I currently having an issue with what would appear to be numerous flat spots across the rev range in all gears.

I have had the inlet manifold pipe work all replaced £400, I have had a new coil pack and new plugs £300, I have also had the engine flushed as well as the fuel system with an oil change £200, this is aside from a service and MOT costing a fair amount of course.

Anyway, even after all this work and getting the car back from the garage today there seems to be no diagnosis and no fault codes however loss of smooth power delivery and therefore a drop in power overall.

The lambda and MAF all seem to be ok according to the garage and now the thoughts turn to the turbo. I am a loss of what to do now and my bank balance cant cope with this anymore, especially if the problem is the turbo.

I am just wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences or has any ideas of what this could be? I was hoping that once I got the coil pack replaced I would be ready for a remap in 2 months time now I am thinking of just getting a new car altogether.

Sorry for this sounding so negative, im sure most of you have had similar car issues.

Regards

Where are you based? Maybe a member could take a look at it. What plugs etc were used & what was replaced exactly?

i live in bristol. I havent checked what plugs were used but they were £40 as charged by the garage to me. The coil pack was replaced today as the car was misfiring as well and this seems to have cured this. The car did feel slightly better to drive however it is very clear that the car is still delivering its power in bursts.

So they replaced ALL coils? Why a further one? For £300 Id expect a full set and a full spare set!

yes all coils replcaed. £300 was for plugs, 4 coils and labor. That included the 20% VAT that I kindly donated to the government.

mate take it to a specialist. I live in Oxford and drove up to R-tech at Leicester for my remap. They could stick your car on the rolling road and do all the diagnostics and they know the 1.8t inside out. I'd rather travel and get an expert to look at my car than trust any random garage on it.

maybe i could take it to shark performance and they could help, thats where ive been planning my remap anyway. Anyone know if they could help, maybe il just call them tomorrow.

Good advice. Id avoid that garage, they are expensive for what you have had done IMO.

Just to throw this one into the pot.

Are you sure it has not already been remapped and it is overboosting? Is it flat spotting at around 3k & 4.5k ish?

Turbo hits 1.4 bar, temps rise etc, then the engine shuts down, then boost rises again hitting 1.4 bar +4k rpm then engine shuts down again.

Is it always flat spotting, or does it mainly happen with lots of throttle?

You could try PD Cars on the Gloucester Road in Bristol, they are VAG specialists.

Peter.

As the N75 valve been checked?

I checked for a remap using vcds and got roughly around 1600 milibar as the boost pressure, if memory serves me correct. Now, according to another member this means it hasnt been remapped.

It is flat spotting at those revs and a few other places. It always happen at full throttle but if you drive it normally it feels ok.

You could be onto something here, perhaps my car has been remapped? Ihave no idea about the valve mentioned above either, I personally havent checked it. How could this be an issue?

On top of the N75 valve, there is a possibility that it as had a dodgy free trial remap that lasts 24 hours, have heard of peeps who have had big problems when the freebie as cancelled itself and supposedly returned to std.

give ben @ sharkperformance a call mate i'm sure he'd help you out especially if your planning on driving up to him anyway.

Where did your 1600 mbar come from? Is this at higher rpm and under load? Otherwise turbo will not be producing max boost. From my logs you should be at least 3k rpm.

For example from VAG-COM logs:

Charge Pressure (actual Value) mbar = 1600

current atmospheric pressure = 990 (mbar)

Therefore turbo is boosting 1600 - 990 / 1000 = 0.61 bar (I think standard is something like max 0.7)

Here is an example (remapped):

Engine Engine Charge Pressure

Speed Load (actual Value)

/min % mbar

1400 30.8 990

1520 78.2 1080

1680 88.7 1210

1880 97.7 1320

2120 115.8 1510

2360 139.8 1790

2680 162.4 2130

3080 181.2 2400

3360 185.7 2370

3720 179.7 2300

4040 178.2 2330

4360 166.9 2190

4680 171.4 2250

4920 163.9 2080

5200 160.2 2070

5440 157.9 1990

5680 153.4 1910

5880 149.6 1890

From these results max boost pressure is around 1.4 bar.

I believe 1600 was at 3k rpm. I've decided to get rid of the car and I am putting a deposit down on a brand new octy vrs, now I just gotta decide whether to get DSG or not. Going for a test of DSG tomorrow. At least with a new car I haven't got the hassle of repairs etc.

hello mate did you get the new car as i live in bristol and would be happy to look at the car for you

Hi, sorry to hijack this thread. But would you happen to know much about the 1.9tdi? Would love someone to look over mine as I think somethings not quite right with it.
