Sorry to be boring , new cambelt cost?

Featured Replies

Hi All

Sorry to be boring - I know this has been discussed a lot here, but I was wondering what the current position is.

My Octavia 2 was new Jan'07 & has done 32500 miles, I live in Jersey so mostly done here with 1 or 2 trips to UK mainland or France.

Local dealer wants nearly £500 (!Gulp) for Toothed belt (or Cambelt) + pullies / water pump etc.

Is above fair?

We do not have VAT in Jersey!

I am going to visit relies near Oxford early April, so phoned 2 dealers there and they said £380 & £395 inc. VAT & would only fit/quote a new water pump if there were any signes of leaks etc, my local lot said they fit a new water pump in the £500 approx price.

VAT at 20% = about £75 odd, makes Jersey very expensive!!!

Do I dare wait, given my low milage 40mph in Jersey?

Any advise would be very greatfully received.....................

Many thanks

ps, do any of you live in the Oxford/Reading area and which dealer would you recomend?

I paid £300 for mine to be done on my old 2.0 TDi PD Octy2.

Is it the 1.9TDI you've got? I thought these were meant to be cheaper or at least that's what I was told by a Skoda dealer as they said the 2.0 TDI's were more pricey. My local dealer would do the timing belt in my car for around £425 inc VAT, I took it to another who were doing a special offer of £300 inc VAT although they were the ones saying the 1.9 was cheaper as it was just £200 for the 1.9 TDI.

As for whether to do it or not, there's no real answer to that. I was faced with a similar decision as my car had only done 23K when it reached four years old and only gets light use, there's certainly plenty of evidence the timing belt will last quite a bit longer however I wasn't happy chancing it because if it does snap it's a hefty repair bill.

I can't advise regarding a diseasel, but mine goes in (to my local mechanic) for the timing belt, water pump, new Diverter valve the head light realignment, and the price he has quoted gives me change from 300 sheets!

I have supplied the DV though.

I have used parkview Reading and they seemed very efficient the car was ready ahead of the time they said and they rang to tell me I could collect it normally I have found you end up having to ring to find out if your cars done.

I have not used the Oxford dealer so can't comment.

Thanks for all you help/replies, I will give Parkview in Reading a call, my engine is a 1.9tdi pd.

vRS_Pagey , what is DV!?

Many thanks all, I wished I could find someone to do it for £200 or at worst £300!

I don't mind driving upto 50 miles of Oxford..................

Jewsons Skoda is alright albeit a bit pricey, although they're pretty good at price matching to take your business. It might be worth driving a few miles down the road towards Witney though, where you'll find Grey Gables Skoda. Family run business and they tend to be cheaper than Jewson.

Hope that helps

Many thanks for your help bunglebear32.

It was Grey Gables Skoda who quoted me £380, as my relies live nearer Witney I think I will go there.

Just need to work out if I risk waiting tlll the 1st week of April to get this job done!! Gulp......................

Thanks

You could buy the parts at VW Spares and then get someone to fit them.

£500 seems a tad expensive likes.

I just paid £456 for my timing belt, water pump and stretch bolts to be replaced at my local dealer. Mines is the tfsi though

Thats me at the moment, as with a split diaghram 50% of my boost is hitting fresh air, ppssshhhhhhhhh!!! :giggle:

DM Keith Bradford charged me £350 inc vat last year on a 1.9TDi. They told me the 1.9 was the cheapest replacement of the Octavias. Price included a new water pump which they recommended replacing at the same time.
