Plastic exterior trim deteriorating?

Featured Replies

Given my Yeti its regular wash and brush up with the usual Autoglym items and noticed further

deterioration to what I thought were items I'd seen before but not worthy of mentioning.

1) The silver grey 'U' shape lower trim at the front of car which runs under the number plate has

started to go an uneven colour like a water mark effect quite noticable from a few feet.

I thought a good clean and polish would do the trick but it looks like an effect under the

clear coat. I have kept the car clean during the recent bad weather and not used

anything other than Autoglym on it. Also no salt left on the car.

Could this be a cold weather effect...surely should not affect paint???

The two thick vertical sections of the 'U' are affected but strangely the narrow lower horizontal section

appears unaffected.

My only thoughts are any spray from the headlight washer jets could have this affect but

I think they are too far away....anyway haven't changed/added any washer fluid and

no other nearby paint affected so highly unlikely.

The similar panel attached to the rear of the car under the black bumper that is more exposed to dirt

is ok and not affected by same issue so it looks like a manufacturing fault.

2) The rear boot lid 'Skoda' circular badge is becoming very cloudy and mottled at the

outer edge on the chrome band....look like water is penetrating under the surface a bit like when water

penetrates clear varnish.

It is in about 3 random places and not uniform all round (say 70% of circumference unaffected.)

Anyone noticed these items.

Would they be considered warranty items???

The 'Steel Grey' paint work is pristine with door protection film fitted and

I have yet to spot even a paint chip on the Sept 2010 registered car.

Your comments appreciated.

Can`t comment about your paint but you can get a replacement skoda badge, I had 2 replaced in Warranty

Hi - mine was registered at the same time - I have just checked outside and the front trim looks OK to me. The extreme outside edge of the back logo does show some sign of water ingress in a couple of small patches - perhaps 6mm diameter. I share some of your concern, since I do take care of my cars, and don't expect this sort of thing to happen this quickly. If it gets any worse I will most certainly take it up at first service (another 3,000 miles or so), and I think you should too.

These plastic coated trims do not seem to last well, as I noticed on my old Golf. The logo had started to really look tatty after 3 years. Incidentally, I am still awaiting a replacement for the chrome-effect surround of the front logo - mine had nasty mottled staining under the surface from new. I understand from the dealer that they have a few of these on order, for several different models, and it is a known problem. They think the delay in getting replacements might be due to Skoda re-sourcing this item.

Whatever, I don't think we should tolerate the sort of deterioration you describe, in these sort of timescales, and I would be very surprised if your dealer argued otherwise..

My rear badge deterioration adds up to an area of a about the full width of the outer chrome circle part of the badge

(plastic I know) and covering 30% of the badge circumference in 3 random places, largely the top part being affected.

More concern is the front trim which looks like a respray or replacement needed.....I assume they come painted

as there is only one silver colour...could be pricy. Shouldn't happen to 3 month old car.

Owned lots of new cars (company) and never had this problem before.

Lots of Honda's/BMW'S have this sort of coloured plastic trim with no problems I have come across.

Take it up with your dealer - I bet it will just get replaced, and that will be the cheapest solution . As you say - 'it shouldn't happen...'

Perhaps James at Allams will comment if he reads the thread..

Been to friendly dealer and both items will be dealt with as warranty items.

The badge problem is not unknown it seems.

The cloudy mottled silver paint was treated as it shouldn't have happened and not sure of exact cause

after a bit of our special cleaner had no effect.

Any body know if they come pre-painted as it could save the Yeti a paint shop job if that is a lower

cost option for them?

if it's not prepainted (which i beleive it is) and needs painting, the dealer should do it before fitting to your car to minimise the time your car is off the road

Many years of BMW and 8+ years of Honda ownership NIL warranty issues.

3+ months of SKODA and 2 items on 1ST warranty claim..........

Not a good start .....but to be fair the build quality looks generally very good.

Lets hope all the clever electronics don't become an expensive pain out of warranty period.

The faulty badge issue should concern Skoda ...It feels like picking up a Rolls Royce only to find the

Badge going rusty!!!

Still a happy Yeti owner...hope it stays that way!!
