Great.. Brake fluid cap off for 10000 miles

Featured Replies

Just found out my brake resovoir cap has been off and nobody has touched that department since I bought the car. I take it ill need to flush out the hole system as it should have loads of water and whatever else in there now. Luckily the cap was 'chilling' in a nice little slot where it couldn't move from. Just a little rave, im done now. :)

Brake fluid needs to be replaced every 2 years anyway - so don't panic!

10,000?!? Or a 1,000? Do you not check your oil/water and have a general nose about the engine bay each week?!

Kinda proberly monthly but Ive never been as far as taking the boost hose off that reveals the cap... or the missing cap. and 10,000+++ ive done atleast that since ive had the car.

To be fair to Ross, the brake fluid reservior is located in (imo) the worst location i have ever seen on a car! - I had to go out and buy a tiny funnel to top up my brake fluid as i didn't want to risk pouring fluid all over the engine and surround.

Its like it came as an after-thought to Skoda after they'd worked out the the engine would fit in the bay! :dull:

Brake fluid is Hygroscopic therefore absorbs the moisture in the atmosphere.

Although not exactly perfectly air tight with the reservoir cap fitted, it does reduce the absorption somewhat.

By leaving it off for that period of time I would advise renewing your brake fluid.

In general a technician should use a fresh bottle of brake fluid everytime they do a fluid change because once the seal has been broken on the bottle the fluid will start to absorb moisture.

Not so good if your car is the next booked in for a brake fluid change more than a few days later and the technician decides to finish the used bottle off first before fetching a fresh one from the parts dept. (food for thought!)

tyres go so fast I keep checkin them. On such an advanced modern car I wouldnt expect to check the engine more often than monthly , Would you expect your mother to?

Speaking of after thought... Whose noticed the tape on the spoiler in the center? Its because it rubs on the antenna when the boots open :dull:

Seen where it is on a Galaxy/Sharan? You need to remove the airbox from the car just to be able to see it properly.

Tried checking the power steering level lately?

I'm pretty sure Skoda squeezed the engine into the bay, stood back, then....."Bugger, where do we put everything else? Ahh it'll be fine" :giggle:

Well I for one am very glad they did manage to squeeze it in

Shoehorn!

By the way way this thread LOL.

101% agree

Get it done straight away

That will be full of water and will not take much to boil the fluid

A brake fluid service should be Ok then

Sarah

The diesel engine was delayed in this country because of the lack of space in the engine bay

LHD was Ok , but RHD had a real issue

So it could be worse LOL

It is an after thought, we are in a very small minority by sitting on the wrong side of the car to drive, makes perfect sense in LHD.

PAS reservoir is a pain BUT the level should never drop. The oil doesnt get used or burnt so if it does drop its leaking and something needs to be repaired and not just topped up anyway.

The brake system is not entirely sealed anyway even with the cap on, hence why replacement every 2 years is needed.

You don't need to "flush" the system as such, a brake fluid change should be all that's needed. I sometimes wonder if most garages do a thorough enough job of it. I am sure there are some kwikfit type places out there who drain it all out of one bleed nipple or get the turkey baster out and replace what's in the reservoir.

Is it not really annoying when someone whom is very bored on a Friday morning forces data onto unsuspecting forum members about left/right driving countries and the percentage split ???? ohh that 'll be me then! :p :p :p

LEFT-DRIVING COUNTRIES RIGHT-DRIVING COUNTRIES

Population population

Total 1,940,043,524 Total 3,824,348,286

34% (Left) 66% (Right)

I did that when I replaced my coolant expansion tank (although I drained and flushed the system properly at the correct time!) :p

Which Friday morning has a 21.00 hrs in it?

I can only marvel at your so precise statement of population. Thank you God.

Did you include Arab, African and Asian countries where the use of either side of the road is arbitrary?

Right now break down those countries that Skoda models are on sale in

And does that mean they drive on the right hand side / left hand side of the car or the road? I think ti means road thus LHD.

Plus they are designed and built as LHD cars first as thats the domestic arrangement.

It was 11.24ish in the morning I believe the time on the post log states, perhaps you were looking at the original post to which I was replying to.

I did originaly try to add all the countries, both left and right with individual populations but it didn't come out well on the posting so had to summarise. lol :p

A good spot that the data is "side of road" and not "side of car". Perhaps a hole has been dug that I cannot dig myself out of! lol
