Side lights and HIds fitted but problem...

Featured Replies

I fitted my Hids tonight and also some led side lights from Ebay. The hids work great but the side lights only turn on for 4 seconds before shutting down and bringing up the bulb error light.

Is there anything I could try or should I send them back? The lights looked brilliant white when they were on so I would like to keep them if possible. I turned off the cold polling is it? for the side lights but the error still came up.

I was going to try Hauptmann's kit but I couldn't wait for him to get them in stock :p

If you definitely turned off the Cold Diagnostics and the the lights are still turning off then it is likely that they are drawing excessive current. The Cold Diagnostics are a check on filament continuity when the ignition is first turned on (i.e. to check for a blown filament). Even with Cold Diagnostics turned off the controller will still shut down the lights if it detects other problems with sidelight circuit (e.g. if the current draw is out of spec). This is to protect the circuit and the controller.

Thanks

What is the name for the cold diagnostics I should be turning off, is it front parking lights or what?

Thanks

Yes, its 'front parking lights'

EDIT: In fact I notice that they are sold as 'Error free' with CANbus, so in theory they should still work OK even if you don't turn of Cold Diagnostics - although it is better to turn it off.

They LOOK almost identical to the ones I get (although the markings on the compnents are different). There seem to be loads of 'clones' of these, all look very similar but perform slightly differently. I guess there's loads of Chinese factories copying each other and trying to undercut each other on price. Its hard to say how they will perform just by looking at them.

The ones I have have no numbers on them like in the picture. I have double check and parking lights are deactivated, interestingly I have a sidelight out now but the bulb warning still lights up even after I have cleared fault code . I thought cold diagnostics deactivated cancelled the bulb warning ?

No, Cold Diagnostics checks for a blown filament when the ignition is turned on (whether the sidelights are turned on or not) - it does this by passing a small current through the filament.

When the sidelights are turned on the controller still expects to see an appropriate current draw and it flags a fault if it doesn't.

So it sounds like they are not drawing enough current - the controller thinks the bulb has blown so doesn't power that circuit. Probably explains why they worked for four seconds and then turned off.

Send them back and send some pennies to Hauptmann - you won't regret it

LED sidelights arrived and fitted today thanks to Hauptmann  .

Both are working great without errors and last longer than 4 seconds. They are nowhere near as bright as the ones from Ebay but maybe that was my problem lol.

All in all I'm very happy with the HID/LED set up

Pagey do you know if they adjusted your lights much when you had then adjusted? I have mine nearly full way up and have not been flashed by anyone yet B)

Yes, there is a limit to how much current you can draw without the controller flagging a fault. Your eBay ones probably pulled a bit too much current, so 'CANbus' or not, they still put the light on.

Eric can you take a look at the pic please, to me the LEDS seem quite blue. Is everyone elses this colour?

Its difficult to say by looking at the picture (due to camera and monitor colour response etc.). However all of the ones that I've sent out should be a good match to 4100-5000K HIDs and look 'white' against those bulbs. They might look a bit blue against halogen headlights (which are slightly yellow).

The bottom line is that if you are not happy with the colour then PM me and you can return them for refund, or I can send you a new set which I'll double-check for 'whiteness' before I send out.

Mine where that colour, we had a VOSA and police check on our taxis and they said get them out as they where blue

Looking at ccs-digital's post http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/184915-new-hids-and-led-sidelights-fitted/page__st__20 his seem a little blue too but tbh mine only really look blue when HID lights are on, then the difference is quite noticeable. I will take another pic tonight with just side lights on.

Probably better to send them back and I will take a look at them. They should not look blue against HIDs (assuming HIDs are 4100-5000K). With the LED removed from the sidelight unit and powered from 12V (e.g. via a mains adapter or from the car battery) they should a nice bright 'toothpaste' white. Taking pictures with a camera can be a bit hit-and-miss because the camera responds differently to the human eye, and of course people's monitors tend to behave a bit differently.

Ok thanks pm your address and I'll try get em off but maybe the weekend before I can get to post office. Tbh I hadn't noticed until my mate got in the car and started singing "blue is the colour" :S

When I looked I could definitely tell they were blue. Maybe your supplier changed the bulb?

No idea mate, sorry, the irony is I was running them for about a week before adjustment with no 'flashing' then yesterday (after realignment) swmbo tells my a car infront of her kept switching their rear fog on and off! :S

OK, will PM the address.

I checked a pair from the same batch as yours and they were definitely a nice white. Yours could be a 'random' pair that are blue - anyway get them back and I will check a pair for colour and send to you by return post.
