How much oil is normal in boost pipes?

Featured Replies

I've had a boost pipe pop off (again) today, and there seemed to be a fair amount of oil dripping out of it.

The car is due for a service in a couple of months, and when I checked the dipstick (admittedly the first time in a while) last week, it was half way between the markings. About 500ml brought it back up to the top.

It looked like it was about a cap full that was collected at dripping out at the connection.

I've circled the connector that came off

Just a quick bump on this ;)

I took mine off a few months ago just to give them a clean up, there was a small amount of residue, but nothing significant, just used carb cleaner/rag myself emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Mine is currently weeping at the connection between the turbo outlet and EGR inlet, and when I took the hose off at the other end of the EGR (so the opposite end of the 90deg piece from where you're circled), there was a little puddle inside the overlapping section - perhaps a teaspoonful or so. But oil consumption isn't any higher than it has been over the last 105,000 miles (needs topping-up once between oil changes) so for the timebeing I'm working on the assumption that it's just the O-ring that's perished in my case.

Have you had the car long enough to notice any trend in oil consumption? Only if it's significantly worse than before would I worry, as you are always going to get oil in the boost hoses due to the crankcase breather injecting oily air into the turbo inlet.

Well I've had the car since April, and over the first few months, the oil was pretty much level at the top. Last time I checked the level was between Xmas and new year, and it was about 3/4 up on the markings.

I'd just monitor it for the moment, then. :)

Carefull that you dont overfill your oil! As this can produce excess residue you are experiencing.

There should be a light covering of oil from oil vapour so best re check your oil level on a flat surface and drain any excess.

Unless the turbo oil seals are leaking, it's simply oil residue from the PCV system. Most of it collects in the SMIC, but some does get blown through when you hit boost revs. Simple fix, clean it all out, and fit the elephant hose mod.
