256mm Rear Brakes Question

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

In the not-too-distant future, I will be fitting 312mm brakes to my non-vRS Fabia. I already have the calipers and carriers, have sourced the vRS-spec wheel bearings and bearing housings for less than Skoda want for them, and then it's just a case of discs, pads and fluid, which will all be new. This will all be getting fitted around Easter when I am next home.

Now, the non-vRS 1.9TDi uses 256mm front brakes. Are these the same as the ones used in the fairly common 256mm rear brake upgrade on VAG cars? If so, what else would I need to transplant my existing front brakes to the rear?

Might not even be possible, just thinking out loud.

Many thanks,

Andrew

I dunno.... but lots of info in this page. but maybe not an answer :(

VW mk4 brake setups, kits and options.

p.s. Just got a mental image of your car with baby/sky/powder blue calipers..? lol.. dunno why (looked good in my head) hehe.

You got me interested.. but I don't think they'll fit.. RE: this conversation snippit from mk1v's.net

I'm looking at upgrading my 150bhp too

312mm fronts (288mm previous)

rears to the 256mm x 22mm Vented Discs, 38mm Lucas single Piston calipers

my only dilema is that my rears are at present 232mm x 9mm Solid Discs

Will upgrading these be a pain in the ass

Joe Bloggs replies,

No you just need either rear calipers from a FWD car (Octavia VRS, Golf V5, Leon Cupra R etc.) OR a 6mm spacer kit from DaveB1970 and use 4WD calipers from TT etc.

You will need to either cut/bend your existing splash guards or remove/replace them but this involves pulling the hub off which is more hassle than it's worth.

He quite specifically says the guy'll need rear calipers.

Won't you need a handbrake mechanism on the callipers? ;)

as above says ...front calipers have no handbrake mechanism..

you need calipers from golf anniversary/octy vrs/audi tt 2wd...an easy conversion...little fiddly things like rear disc protectors need lip trimmed off/removed or mk4 golf ones with the fitting holes elongated a little.

Where are you now Andrew?

You need a rear setup, disk offset is different on rears normally

octy vRS rear brakes fit and work fine.

Thanks guys, I hadn't considered the handbrake, d'oh!

Where are you now Andrew?

Glasgow at present :)

octy vRS rear brakes fit and work fine.

Would that be Mk1 or Mk2?

Just mark 1 to my knowledge - Same with Leon Cupra R and I think Anniversary Golf GTI (mark 4 platform)
