caliper painting

Featured Replies

hi folks, what's everbody do with thier brake calipers? use that special caliper paint that you mix a hardener in with or hammerite or what??

ok, the calipers i'm using are brand new recon units so they are bare metal clean, i've had the carrier brackets shot blasted so they are also spotlessly clean, what next?

pictures for inspiration would be good

Hi Tom

I did my Fabia brakes with (the now discountinued) Smooth Green Hammerite.

No problems at all. Carefully applied with a brush to the bare metal of brand new calipers and 99% of it is still there

^^ that's a really nice smooth finish on those mate

i'm thinking about either green or red?

Same paint used for the engine cover. It was only for testing, I must do a better job later.

I powder coated mine :-P looks nice and smooth. Mate bouht some heat ressistant paint and after a proper degreese sprayed them and they look ok and the paint seems to hold cheap way of doing it but seems to be worth it.

thanks for the replies folks, i remembered i had a £20 halfrauds voucher hiding in my purse so i went with the foliatec 2 part stuff that they sell, you get a small can of hardener to mix in with the paint, they had a choice of red or yellow at halfords but they do a green one too by special order only, i was far too eager to wait a whole 24 hours

they've been hanging up for a day now on recycled coathangers and they've come out really nice, the pic looks like there are a few chips but that's a trick of the light on my dodgy point and shoot camera

Probably a good thing in that case, since the Foliatec green is that disgusting Ford Focus RS lime green...

The Audi boys are banging on about Japlac paint for calipers. Available in every DIY shed and it seems to be pretty durable. Can't quote prices but I got the impression it wasn't too outrageous. Quite a range of colours available too.

I'll be trying it out soon - weather permitting.

I'm painting mine this weekend, is it easier to take them off or just paint them on? Masking tape and degreaser should

Help!! I've got the hammerite smooth green as recommended by guys on here. eBay has loads of the stuff. Any tips on the best way to do the

Would be appreciated, I know I've gotta sand them down and wire brush any junk aswell.

Thanks

with all painting, getting them clean is the key to a good finish, that's why I had my carrier brackets shot plasted before hand, my calipers are brand spanking new re-con units so they are spotlessly clean to start with

When I bought mine, they were absolutely filthy, and this is the order that I did them in:

Wire brush

Wire wool

Toothbrush with parafin

Sandpaper to get a better surface for the paint

Wipe down with isopropanol and cloth

Hammerite paint
