1.2 12v estate or 1.9 sdi - quick, vote now!

Featured Replies

Me again! Hope it's ok to start a new topic... But need quick advice

2 cars in the running:

1.2 12v 53 plate fabia estate. 32k on the clock. Serviced 2k ago, mot 11/11. 6 months tax

dealer sale. £2,700 delivered

1.9sdi 52 plate. 35k on the clock. Service 8 months ago, so coming up to the 40k. Mot 11/11, tax until April

£2,700 'list price'

the hurry is that we need a replacement car ASAP as the Felicia died a death on thursday

they are on different sides so can't really go and see both, just want to know best option for 250 miles a week of a road driving (average 50/60 mph journey) - reliable and economical a must

thanks!

I'm sure either car should do the job. Can you post up links to each car?

paralysed by indecision! It's which would do the best job in terms of reliability and running costs,, and I have no clue about the 1.2 diesel - is it significantly bigger / heavier than the hatch?

if you want economy get the sdi... it is painfully slow however

the 1.2 is a petrol engine

depends on the type of journeys you do.

1.2 12v chain driven cam, 1.9 sdi cambelt.

The estate is a useful tool.

The silver is nicer than the blue :giggle:

the 1.2 is a petrol engine

sorry, meant to write estate!

I think the silver one looks nicer, apart from the black painted grill surround (easily fixed!). Lots of people say the SDI is painfully slow, but people who actually own and run them are happy enough with the performance, and the 1.2 is hardly going to set the world alight either :giggle:

I'd say the silver 1.9

had both engines in other cars, 1.9 SDI is far better.

There both slow but one will be slow and amazing on fuel the other wont, also calling the 1.9 SDI a "bullet proof engine" is an understatement if you ask me.

I knew mines was going to the scrappies for ages I spent that time trying to make it break but nothing would kill it, even at 150k

si

Both engines produce the same power (64bhp)

1.2 12v peak torque @ 3000rpm 83lbft

1.9 SDi peak torque @ 1600-2800rpm 93lbft

Fuel consumption 1.2 (1.9 SDi)

urban 36.7 (44.8)

extra urban 55.4 (68.9)

combined 47.1 (57.6)

The diesel is slower, But there's not a massive difference. The extra torque is always useful!

So go for the diesel!

Both are going to be a bit underpowered for an estate, but the SDI should have more torque and better economy. Also the SDI ought to be more reliable.

I think out of the two doing 250 miles a week I'd look at the 1.9sdi first.

SDI all the way! You won't regret it.

Though they seem a bit pricey, paid a lot less for mine.

really? Where should I be looking, and what kind of mileage is a good bet for an sdi? I think we're going to have to wait it out a bit as off on hols next week. Either we get it sorted in next couple of days or wait until march!

Any pointers on where to get a decent priced one?

You may find http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/list.asp?s=334 have some.

Or eBay - dealers often sell on there. It's where I got my car from and I couldn't be happier with the dealers service, or the mechanics of the car.

Just done hpi check on the sdi and it's a cat d so no good for us...

Anyone know anything about the 1.9 sdi saloon?

Cheers!

If they haven't declared it might be good haggling fodder.

Saloon is basiclly the same floor pan as the estate, only with a different windscreen/ boot lid. The floor/base of the boot is equal to that of the estate, just the height differs. I think anyway.

That's right, roughly 10” longer than the hatchback and share the same rear light clusters (different to hatch) Excellent piece of kit. Boot will take 6 x 40 kg bags of coal and 4 bales of briquettes without touching the back seat and you can still have the cover in place! It swallows washing machines for breakfast and a week’s holiday luggage for 2 adults and 2 children for dinner - plus space for a crate of the black stuff and a couple of bottles of wine for herself.

if u want fuel economy go for the sdi there suppose to be brill

can't risk the chassis damage issue and don't really want to get a mechanical check - just another 120 odd quid that we could do with keeping!

Good haggling for others though as didn't declare. Not even sure they know...

a good option then? We don't really need a car with that much space as have an A4 Avant as the long distance chugger, but it seems that you get a bit more saloon for your money. What would you reckon to a 52 plate with 47k on the clock?

Saloons seem cheaper as not as many people liked them, and thus didn't sell (and still don't) as well - hence the cheapness. 47k should be fine, although I found it more age that hurt my Fabia as the rubbers (bushes etc) perished, so check those, and steering rack/cv covers etc too.
