Stripped thread when tightening front carriers

Featured Replies

While changing disks & pads today, when replacing one of the front calipers the thread stripped on the bearing housing emoticon-0106-crying.gif any ideas, would a 12 x 1.5 helicoil do the job? Cheers.

a helicoil isn't much good for a brake caliper, the best thing is a captive insert like a time-sert

Yeah i have repaired some spacers for a guy with time-serts that he had managed to strip the thread out of.......can recommend for deffo mate, prices can vary though depending on the thread i got this mentioned kit from America off ebay.

£114 for a new carrier and about £70 for a bearing iirc.

Or about £50 from a scrappy.

yeah i've done loads of them in the past.. it's vitally important that the thread is dead true and the spacing of the bolts is not altered otherwise the carrier wont fit, likelwise if it's where the caliper bolts on if it's not dead centred on the original thread the slider pins will keep jamming up..

i always do them on the milling machine to get them dead right... to the op. are you sure it's an M12x1.5 thread? iiirc they are 12x1.75 but don't quote me on that, it's worth checking the bolt with a thread pitch guage to avoid a mistake
