Vista 20gb+ user profile

Featured Replies

My Vista ultimate profile is flipping huge.

I've been slowly moving stuff of the machine and onto a NAS drive, but still left with some 20gb+ clogging up my profile and slowing the machine down to a crawl.

The data is all in the roaming part of my profile, yet roaming profiles is disabled and the machine is only ever used locally. Every app loaded has a folder, and the data seems evenly distributed between the folders.

Is there any way I can reduce this? I'm assuming windows is caching my profile over and over?

Roaming is just a term used. Your user profile is made of stuff thats allowed to roam if you have roaming profiles turned on and thing that relate to the workstation are usually under local settings. Roaming will include all your documents, music, photos, videos and so on. Temporary files like the Temp folder and temp internet files are stored in local settings.

Download something like the treesize pro demo and you can see what types of files are in what folders.

You'll have a roaming folder with or without roaming profiles.

Thanks.

So is this size ok, or should I be worried? Vista takes an age to load and become usable lately and I'm thinking this is a big part of the problem.

Check the temp and temp internet folders in your profile. Anything large on your desktop? WinRar has a habit of leaving a lot of stuff around, as does acrobat updater.

Slow windows start up could be a lot of crap in your windows profile. Create a new user and log in as them, if the login is much faster, then you either have a bloated registry for hkey current user, or you have a lot of apps starting up (down by the clock) - either via the start up bit in the start menu, or current user\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run in the registry....

Ccleaner and Defraggler are a godsend on Vista.

Try them....then if still slow upgrade the RAM or upgrade to Windows 7.

...Also right click My Computer and then manage...

Go to services

Disable:

prefetch

Windows Search

...and another one i can't remember at the moment as i'm on a Mac! May be superfetch...ill update in the morning

Dam forgot to check and just shut my vista machine down! Perhaps it is just Superfetch and Windows Search then....I could have sworn there were 3 but its been a while since i did it..

Thanks.

On windows 7 the roaming part of my profile is less than 100mb, how big it gets depends on whats installed.

How much porn have you got on the desktop?
