Rear Speakers???

That said, with a good source (ie. proper CD) mine sounds pretty nice. It's just at motorway

volumes it struggles, especially the front tweeters which distort quite easily.

That might be as a result of the head unit power (or lack thereof)...

we need to try an amp on the preout option... fancy giving me a lift with the wiring through the bulk head Rob?

Will it involve getting my hands dirty? :D

not really.....

next friday i'm going to the car audio dealer to fit the rear speakers. i will opt for the clarion SRR1324. he will also prepare the wiring required to add a subwoofer. I will then decide whether or not the subwoofer is a worthwhile upgrade, he has the clarion SRV202 to try out. will update on the performance by then...

cool let us know....we will be playing with amps/ subs this weekend....

i have put on the rear speakers... they sound ok. but for bass reproduction the stock fronts are much better mainly due to their larger size.

i was very surprised when we tried the subwoofer and the boot because the effect of adding it was pratically zero! With subwoofer full on and boot closed, the subwoofer is not heard from anywhere in the cabin(front/rear passinger). if the boot is opened or one of the seats is lowered, the subwoofer fills the cabin with nice deep bass but as soon as boot closed/seat in place, no effect! the boot of the octavia absobes all the bass produced by this subwoofer. even the dealer was a bit surprised himself and the only suggestion he was able to provide was to go for a stronger subwoofer.

The subwoofer I tried was the SRV202 which has an 8inch driver and 120w of peak power. this setup was just audible from inside the car. the dealer suggested a bazooka subwoofer in a tube enclosure. these things are rated from 100 or 150watts of rms power.

now, i don't know how clarion measure their peak power of 120w but i can assume the 100watts of the bazooka is at least twice as powerfull. gotta try this out sometime soon...

did anybody experience this problem? i never thought a hatchback would absorb all that bass especially considering that the top of the boot enclosure is only the parcel shelf... it's incredible how able is it to kill the bass...

120w peak on a sub?

you need 200w RMS 400w peak to hear asub... and you need an amp matched to that power ?

how did they fit the sub -it would require seperate power direct from the battery to the boot - for the amp... then RCA from theheadunit to the amp - then the sub would need to be in a box?

did they do all this or try and run off the head unit?

since i wanted nothing over the top... the 120w peak power sub was fed from the supply power lines of the head unit.

the bazooka 100 or 150 watts subs need to wired directly to the battery. i would like to avoid having sepearte bass box and amp. I prefer amp built in.

the 120w peak sub is 20cm driver enclosed in rectangular ported enclosure. it comes complete in this way and was driven from the sub out line level outputs of the head unit.

regards

something like that might work if it was in car.. but it will not have the power to be heard from the boot.

hello all again...

today i went again to the car audio dealer to try out the bazooka subwoofer. The model I tried is the Bazooka RS series 8" with built in amplifier 150w RMS. This was much much better than the clarion sub i tried before (see prev posts). Bass is not tremendous obviously, but it comes in the car clean and deep. You will feel the bass especially with tracks like lisa mafia - all over.

have i opted for stronger bass, i would then have to upgrade the rest of the speakers as well else to sound would be too overblown with bass.

I'm very happy with the result. i will post some pics of the hardware in use...

below is the head unit...clarion 738

i opted to install the enclosure along the width of the boot. The manual suggests to install with the speaker facing into a corner, but i found no real improvment fitting in this way.

The reason for choosing to install as shown in the attachment, is so that i can have access to the spare wheel without moving the enclosure.

I have a 10" JBL sub in the boot of mine (pics in another thread) and that sounds great in the front.

Its only a fairly ordinary Sony amp (150W or so) but it is a proper JBL enclosure that the sub is in which can make a lot of difference
