Featured Replies

Just done engine change on a 05 vrs i bought all up and running ok, but both front windows dont work! now the battery has been of for about month or so. DO i need to reset something please help!

They don't work at all?

yes thats right get nothing from them at all

checked all fuses this morning and all seem to be ok, previous owner said they worked ok before i changed engine weird!!, well bloke is coming over tomorrow possibly for diagnostics check on VAGCOM see what he says! any ideas anyone !

Check you have 12V at one of the fuses for the power windows (e.g. F58). I suspect you don't.

If there is no feed to the power window fuses, then you need to follow the cables back to terminal 30 on the relay plate.

sorry where abouts is the relay plate and what would i need to check there, will check 12volts when i get home realy not sure whats going on here weird hey

Right boys the update on windows is that after about 5 miles windows started working then after another 1mile one touch also stated working and did so until i stopped car where it went back to not working again any ideas ?????

Do you have 12V at the fuse when it is not working?

My guess is that you have a loose connection in the fusebox or between the fusebox and the relay plate (which is above the panel above the pedals).

right just checked and there is 11 volts when igntion is on, windows dont work untill you pull the fuse and push is back in windows will then work , keep turning off igntion lots of times and carries on working untill you shut door and lock it then get back into car key in igntion and windows wont work again untill you pull the fuse out push is back in then they both start working again

11V is a bit low but for now we'll assume it's the way you measured it.

Are you trying the windows/taking the measurements with the ignition on/engine running?

Can you measure the voltage at fuse F11?

Another question.

Are you sure that the previous owner hasn't fitted a 3rd party controller such as Alientech?

I am having the similar intermittent problem with the electric windows. I parked my car up for a month they worked fine before then the battery went flat and they have not worked properly since. I have changed the switch with another some so don’t think that the fault. I was wondering if it was a faulty relay. I have got a wiring diagram i am not sure what terminal 30 is? is it the relay plate? If the relay is faulty is there another relay used in a different wiring system which is same which you could swap them over. There is not voltage at fuse 58. thanks

What car do you have? What year is it?

Terminal 30 is the name of the permanent live terminal at the relay plate. The 4 fuses for the doors are fed from a single connection. If all is well you should have 12V on F58, F46, F66 and F53. This is measure between the live fuse (if in doubt try both) and ground. If all 4 are dead, I would drop the fusebox into the driver's footwell, open it and follow the cable that feed the 4 fuses until it reaches the relay plate.

right cheers for the help, checked voltage it starts at around 7 volts and climbs slowly until it reaches around 11 with key in igntion, will do some further tests when i get home and post results, some one else also said something about convience unti or something maybe up with but anyway i will get back to you thanks again

thanks for your help, i have now got 10v at 58 and 46 and then nothing at 66 and 53 but are those for the back window because only have keep fit windows in the back? have also checked the voltage on the window motor and on the brown wire and the red/white wire there is 10v. but the windows are still not working. Checked the multi meter on the battery and it said 12v. Is there a number on the relay for the electric windows? Or what else do you think could be wrong?

right at fuse 46 i have 11.4 volts with car running and 10.6 without and at fuse 58 i have 11.36 running and 0 without although once you stop the engine the voltage very slowly start to decrease from 11 down to 0 (igntion on but not running) same for the other fuse , have now got all plastic off so can see convience unit and the relays

please note car is still the same, disconnect and reconnect battery or rest fuse and the windows will work untill you lock the car with central locking and when you get bck into car they dont work , also the intermitant settings on window wipers dont work so only have medium and slow

also may also help but sometimes very randomly the car alarm goes off , think this maybe pointing at this convience box again , if anyone can help me out

I need to check the circuit diagrams and I will do that first thing tomorrow

ive managed to solve to alarm and intermitant windows it turned out to be bonnet sesor although windows still dont work, but at least 2 problems solved and 1 to go

i have just disconnected the battery and reconnected it the drivers windows worked. Walked away left the key in the ignition and came back 5 minutes later and it did not work. I wonder if this is why they have not worked properly since the battery went flat. I have not it to a garage yet to plug it into a computer do you think this would give you a fault code?

  • Author

right i bought one of those ebay cables cleared all fault codes and the one that keeps poping up is

18009 - Relay for Supply Voltage Terminal 30 (J317): Implausible Signal

P1601 - 35-00

any ideas what this means

That relay is fed from fuse F4, so I would check that first. Are your interior lights working OK?

Still working on your window problem.

fuse 4 is ok and lights are working ok , now looking under the dash as i have 4 relays 393,447,18,103 could it be a problem with any of these
