WD40 on Alloys

Featured Replies

A friend and I were talking about car care, and I asked what he used on his alloys (as they were very shiny) and he responded with WD40. Sorry? He explained that once he's cleaned them, he sprays WD40 onto a cloth and wipes them down - it repels water and lowers the amount of dirt and brake dust that builds up.

I've never heard of this - is he winding me up? Does anyone else do this? Can't this be dangerous - Lubricant so close to brakes?

I've done this before on some aftermarket alloys. You stated "he sprays WD40 ONTO A CLOTH" thats what you should so you don't get any on discs and pads.

Dont bother..It wil ATTRACT more brake dust instead of repelling ot!!

If you read the back of the WD-40 cans now they do say it can be used for alloy wheels. I was shocked aswell when I seen it the other day. Just use good car polish, I find it the best and do the inside of the rim aswell works a treat.

WD40 works alright for helping to clean them - it cuts through brake dust pretty well. For protecting though, it's not going to be very good, no better than spraying light oil. Not going to last at all.

I've used all sorts on both motorcycle and car wheels, for cleaning and protecting/shining - this included WD40 and Mr Sheen furniture polish - cheap and works a treat! Brake and dust build up will be a little more but it comes of no probs and the wheel is left looking new
