Steamy windows - help please

Featured Replies

As I approach the car all windows are clear, most times as soon as I start the car and the windows tend to mist up, especially the rear and rear sides. It clears quickly enough once I turn the climatronic on although, being a diesel it does take longer than my old petrol used to, but surely I should have to turn the climatronic on near enough every time I start the car. I've checked for any signs of water ingress as we've had little else but rain here for a while but there's nothing, I can't understand it, can anyone shed any light?

The air recirculation isn't switched on is it?

No, although it was on one occasion and I hoped that it was just that but it continued to do it afterwards. Not putting the a/c on and having the heating at 22 degrees rather than banged up to max when I first start the car did help this morning when it was 1.5 degrees (as pointed out in the thread that silver1011 very kindly directed me to.

I turned off the heater direction to screen when I parked up at work this morning and when I came out to it this afternoon, in the pouring rain, it didn't mist up so perhaps that's something I'll add to the other thread when I've tried it a few more times to be sure.

My rear parking sensors stopped working properly today so the car is going in on Friday for that to be sorted. I have asked them to have a look at the pollen filter and make sure that's not damp (also pointed out in the thread directed to) and to double check for any water ingress but I'm quite sure it's not that as I've had water ingress in cars before and know every possible place to check and there's nothing, and it was all going so well :S

Might just be a simple case of moisture build-up, during the recent weather we've had. Do you do any journeys of decent distance? I'm just wondering if the car needs opportunity to get fully upto cabin temp and stay there, with AC on, for the issue to sort itself.

If you're sure all the usual suspect areas are clear, it could be worth running a de-humidifier in there, or one of those absorption options mentioned in the other thread. Although the AC system should really cover the dehumidification function itself, if the system is running at proper efficiency and is given a chance to work.

Good luck,

Steve

Cheers Steve, I did a run of 160 miles in the first week and one of 80 miles in the second since I picked it up 2 weeks ago as well as the 20 mile daily commute to work. I have to say that I'm not a lover of a/c but on my next decent run I'll keep it on for the whole journey.

Well I'd imagine that's easily enough distance to clear everything. But I would advise using the AC a bit more often. Does help at this time of year.

Any particular reason you're not a fan of using it?

I've had this problem before, but since I've started using the "auto" feature with a/c on I haven't had the problem as much. I've left the temp on 22 or 23 and left it in the low fan setting of auto and then just turn on the max windscreen demister for when I first get in the car to give it a bit of a hand, then straight back to auto when the windscreen has cleared.

As mad as it sounds, I replaced my Pollen Filter and that improved the speed of demisting by a suprising amount and they are cheap and easy to fit which is a bonus. I'm not suggesting it's a long term cure like my cure for rattles and strange noises (turn the radio up till you can't hear them) but it's worth a go.

Not that mad really. A fresh filter will have better flow and filtration, so should stand a better chance of keeping the cabin clear

As you say, for the price of them it's worth changing anyway.

I hardly ever use my A/C now and since I started that the car never mists up.

Wow! Thanks very much folks for taking the time out and TsvRS cheers for making sure I got the message ;)

Steve, I find a/c sometimes gives me a headache plus I sometimes wear contacts and, just like central heating a/c dries the air which isn't good for them.

Anyway, it was raining when I set off to work this morning and the windows cleared pretty quickly in fact the fronts hardly misted but it might have helped that I turned the blower up to full which I hadn't done before :blush: on arrival at work I checked once again for any signs of water ingress and I'm pleased to say I couldn't find anything.

Like I say the car is going in to Simpsons on Friday for them to check over my rear park sensors, which are now working okay however, I didn't pay for them to work intermittently so it can still be investigated, whilst it's in I've asked them to check the pollen filter after reading elsewhere that if it is damp it can cause misting, the car is only 3 weeks old so if it needs a new one I'll be expecting it changed at no cost to me.

Colne or Preston? Suspect the former, based on your location?

They're a good lot up there - I have full confidence you'll get sorted

Preston, I'm at that end of the Ribble Valley and they better had get it sorted, I know Neil :giggle:

Noticed this afternoon when washing the car that my rear window got condensation on it at the bottom, think I'll ask them to check that it's bonded correctly - I've never liked bonded windscreens :wonder:

I wear contacts every day and my a/c is on all the time, no misty windows and no dry eyes. When i do turn the a/c to ECO or recirculating the cabin air the windows start to steam up. So its AUTO all the time with fresh air in.

My partner has a Mini Cooper and when she doesnt turn the a/c on the windows start to mist up, turn a/c on it clears.
