Cheap Tar Removal

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just wondering if there is any decent off the shelf tar removal stuff you recommend?

Just the suggestions I have seen on here are for like big 5L bottles at £20! Don't need that much :)

Thanks in advance,

Stu

I've heard White Spirit is very good (and very cheap too), might end up just getting that instead.

Tardis is the business, nothing else I have tried comes close. Not even petrol, oddly enough, as Tardis is essentially refined petrol.

I was under the impression that Tardis is 98% White Spirit............ :S

I think you are correct.

After researching the MSDS for Tardis, it turns out it is a mixture of White Spirit and something else.

Or furniture polish!

Petrol's about the cheapest. Effective too.

Most hydrocarbon should work. But watch the pump fuel, some of the additives can be extremely nasty. Coleman fuel- white petrol from campshops for lanterns and stoves is supposed to have less toxins and carcinogens.

Picked up a bottle of White Spirit from Wilkos for £1.something

Should do the trick emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I got a couple of aerosols of Holts tar remover for 50p a can. It forms a gel which you wipe off after a couple minutes. Surprisingly effective.

I've never tried these, might use WD40 on some tar spots - any risks or things i have to do?

Nah, make sure you wipe it off and if it strips any wax or sealant, stick a bit back on!

Keep any oil based stuff away from brake components.

Apart from that, happy days.

Yeah 2 should be plenty, always good to have WD40 round the house anyway.

autoglym tar remover is good in case you happen to have bought 2 other things at Halfords and wondering what else to get when there's a 3 for 2 offer on. :)
