Ah right. I downloaded the 32 bit only version for my netbook then i must have downloaded the 64 bit version on the desktop.

Getting fed up with all this update crap for OS. At least the Mac is in frequent. Even Linux is at every boot up :(

First service pack for something that's been out over a year is not bad, and a lot of the SP1 changes are to support future enterprise products. My mac updates regularly, breaks more frequently and is slower than my win 7 desktop, even though my home PC has a q6600 and my iCrap has an I7.

Where do I begin? I have 2 IE s because 64 bit doesn’t do flash!! Outlook 2010 is a mess compared to the simplicity of 2003 Pro and can’t get a desktop widget for my taskbar and programmes that do run on Windows 7 behave oddly. CS3 won’t let me install if I have the text magnification option selected because it thinks my 1080 screen has got enough resolution. I revert back to standard text dpi and then I can’t read the sodding thing, although the programme will now install. The handy IE spell check can't be pinned it seems

The list is endless

You shouldn't be using IE anyway. I'll agree that OL2010 is ****e compared to 2003, but in general, Win7 isn't bad at all for MS.

If it's a PC World special, I would be inclined to take it back as if 7 is giving you that much trouble I would suggest it's a dodgy bit of hardware :)

I agree, give it back. 'Not of merchantable quality' etc...

I got a Dell M6500 with Win7 with my new job about 3 months ago. I was quite looking forward to it but I'm now pleased it wasn't my own £1400 that paid for it! It's OK'ish but there are loads of little niggles that don't seem to have any logical fix. Nowhere near as bad as what you're describing but annoying never the less.

What are you doing buying it from PCW anyway?! :S

If I wasn't such a nice person, I'd say you deserved all the hassle from buying it at such an emporium of questionable quality.... ;)

I'd throw it back at them as well.

And I might still have a suitable Office 2003 license, if you need it.

I got a good deal (spent an hour haggling :D.

Update so far: Having just spent 14 hours at work today so have been too busy to worry about pooter. This has helped enormously. Since I did the 9.4 registry thingy, my reinstalled (from previous owned version and it runs and updates with the original key! - but thanks for the offer) is very stable :) and my google sync works again. I have come to the conclusion that I will stick with 2003 and put the 2010 Outlook down to an expensive mistake. Mind you, the sync icon vanished today from that funny little bolt on task bar box?? I have now pinned it to the task bar and I think it will remain there (was it wise of me to use a drawing pin to do it though ?)

Apart from running hot (An Envy known issue) I love the wide gamut screen (principle reason for the purchase) and Mac rip off styling. The keyboard is the chic-lit stylee thing which is also very nice and the pooter came with almost no bloatware at all, which is a pleasant change. I think after 24 hours of solid pratting about with the dammed thing, I am coming to some sort of middle ground with the thing and have calmed down a lot from my initial disappointment. I still think it is crazy the amount of hassle i had with an OS that has been around for come time though :(

ps glad to see ther are fellow 2003 pro lovers out there :)

You? Haggle? Nah.

Glad you're making progress anyway.

Just wish with Office 07/10 you had the option to use normal toolbars. That would quell most of my issues. I know the 'ribbon' design is supposed to increase efficiency but that just seems like BS to me. It didn't need a re-design, as efficiency was good - because I knew where everything was. Catch-22?

Anyway - happy computing :D

I was born to haggle :D

I also don't like the faint fonts used and even though I mucked about with themes and the like. I prefer the nice dark, sharp fonts on 2003. This opening tabs to move on with your work is purely a gimmick as far as I can fathom :(

Any ideas why I cant share anything but Media with my old XP desktop. I haven't had a problem with sharing everything on my network before, but not now:( also I can't share my printer anymore :(

Oh well. The laptop looks really nice when it isn't doing anything :D

I trialed Office 2010 for the prospect of going legit, went back to '03 version cause the new ones so gimmicky - change in presentation for the sake of.

My thoughts exactly.

For some reason my Google calendar sync keeps dissapearing every couple of days now too :(

Totally agree. I made the mistake of installing Office 2007 on the laptop and still using Office 2000 on the desktop.

Productivity is miles better on the desktop, needless to say, and I use them roughly 50/50.

It wouldn't be quite so bad if the tabs remained constant, but some of them change depending on what you're doing and a command you had previously taken 10 minutes to find then disappears again :wall:

You can disable the ribbon in office I believe. However I have been told that once you get used to the ribbon then you will think it is the best thing since sliced. We are migrated from Office 2003 to 2010 at work, and I run 2007 at home, so I am half used to the ribbon. I think Outlook 2010 now has the ribbon too.

I can agree that it seems to take ages to find things that were were "just there" since office 4.3

Yes, that is what they tell you. However, I've been using Office 2007 on and off for about 3 years now. And I *still* don't find it as good as 2003. Suppose it will suit some people more than others. Being in the IT game I think I'm more adaptable than most to these sorts of software changes. Mind you, I'm also fairly well placed to spot when MS have made a bit of an error!

We still roll with 2003 commercially; I'm not looking forward to the day when a company roll-out decision is made to migrate to 2010, or perhaps a future version. I can see the company productivity drop now, plus the budget required for user training. And with 10k+ users, it's not gonna be a small number emoticon-0120-doh.gif

We are starting to that now, and I believe Office 2010 training will just be some online stuff. I guess they also expect a lot of us to have a new version of office at home, because we can buy it for about £20 (or anyone with kids can get it even cheaper via the education thingy).

Current: Win xp sp2 (yep, sp2!), Office 2003, Sharepoint 2007

New: Win 7, Office 2010, Sharepoint 2010

Staff count: not sure, around the 8-9k mark maybe, but we keep sacking people. Plus a few people may leave if they have to use Office 2010 :giggle:

Am I missing something? I am hoping someone will step forward and announce "of course I use the Classic setting for 2010, so it looks like 2003".

i cant see a skin to change it to traditional toolbars and menu bars but there is this:

Ribbon Classic view

Outlook 2010 no longer uses Toolbars and Menus in the main interface but now also uses the Ribbon. If you are heaving issues with finding your favorite options in the new interface, you can use the guide: Where do I find…?.

Outlook does not ship with a classis interface built-in to mimic the interface of Outlook 2007 and previous. For people having difficulties to quickly adapt to the new interface and to support migration projects, I’ve created a customized Ribbon which looks like the Office 2007 interface.

Download: http://www.howto-outlook.com/files/classictab2010.zip

You can add the Classic tab in the following way;

1. Download and extract the zip-file.

2. Open the Options dialog in Outlook via; File-> Options

3. Select the "Customize Ribbon" section on the left.

4. Use the Import/Export button at the bottom right to select "Import customizations file".

5. Browse to the folder where you extracted the zip-file.

6. You'll now see 3 files;

* classic.customUI

This customizations file will only show the Classic tab and will hide all others.

* classic-firsttab.custumUI

This customizations file will add the Classic tab as the first before all the default tabs.

* classic-lasttab.customUI

This customizations file will add the Classic tab as the last tab after all the default tabs.

7. Pick one of the files and click on "Open" to return to the Options dialog.

8. Click on OK to close the Options dialog and to return to Outlook.

Wow you have done some work!! I will have to have a look at it when I get a bit more time. 12-14 hours days at the moment :(

Ihave 2010 on my desktop, 2003 on my Laptop. 2010 sucks. That is all.

I'm a Microsoft fanboy, well I do contract out to them, and I have to admit that I don't like Outlook 2010. For my mail I use Windows Live Mail 2011 which is actually very very good, I am finding it to be much better than my previous favourite, Thunderbird performance wise.

My domain goes through google apps, and I use the Google exchange active sync on my android, Google calendar off line viewer, live mail 2011 and mac mail app to view mail via imap, works perfectly for me.

I like the rest of the office suite, but not outlook 2010, and if you look at it from an Exchange 2010 angle, Exchange Web App offers more functionality for an end user than outlook 2010 does. Exchange Web App is a thing of beauty, especially the ECP.

Agree on the Outlook/Exchange side of things Tony. It's a bit strange as you say, when the Web Access side of things gives you more to play with than the same company's main mail client!! :wonder:

I now use Live Mail, which is OK except the font is a bit lacking in contrast. I like the whole thing to look simple and sharp (probably because I am getting older and my eyes aren't' what they once were :D ) But it does sync, interestingly enough, with my Google mail accounts. I added a couple of extra folders to my laptop Live Mail and was surprised to see they appeared almost instantly on my Google Mail account on my phone. Very nice touch :)

I couldn't get Google Sync to work with my 2010 Outlook :( but I guess your pro exchange stuff is designed to do it? I hunted on the web and all the links I found said Google wasn't going to support my 2010 version :(

I have the same problem as you in that text is awful. I have now got my old programs working by installing Windows XP mode with makes it a virtual PC.

ARGHHHHHHHH

Sorry !! you should have got yourself an Apple iMac.

Windows 7 just another vain virus ridden attempt by Microsoft to copy Apple iMac operating system.

I do apologise for stating the obvious in your case, but do seriously think about it.
