Crap handbrake

Featured Replies

Hi

2002, 110 Tdi, rear disc's.

Hand/parking brake doesn't hold on steep gradients. Its just passed MOT!. Foot brake good and looking at rear disc's nothing wrong with hydraulic side. Are there any linkages in calipers which seize up, or do cables give problems. Previous Octavia was also poor.

Any info appreciated..

ive seen a few handbrake levers seize/partialy on vag rear calipers,- when the handbrake is applied are you getting equal movement of both caliper levers? when handbrake is released do they both return to the fully off position? (two man job- one operates handbrake, other checks calipers..) sometimes wd40 helps release them.. usualy end up replacing defective one with a recon.. also worth looking to see how worn the rear pads are (both inner and outer..)

it must have 'only' just passed the mot? be interesting to know what the efficency is?

dont know if this is gonna be of any help, but this is how i would go about it myself.. :S

goodluck :)

Mine passes its MOT every year, but I have always through the handbrake was a bit rubbish - not has it roll away on me yet though.

Take care not to get wd40 onto the surfaces of the pads/disks - otherwise performance might get even worse for a while :o

There is an adjuster underneath the rear ashtray.

Chock wheels and release handbrake.

Take off the left armrest pivot cover.

Undo the bolt and remove the armrest.

Remove rear ashtray.

Undo the two torx screws that hold the rear of the centre console down.

Lift up the rear of the centre console to reveal the adjuster.

Tighten the adjuster until until the handbrake levers on the calipers lift of the stops by just over 1mm.

Apply the handbrake fully and release three times.

If all is working OK, the handbrake will hold the car under any conditions. Put everything back together.

I think most handbrake's that work through the calipers are crap,

I cleaned back brakes up on mine on saturday more to try and stop them squeeking more than anything but osr brake was sticking on abit, found inner pads to be seized into calipers again, only cleaned them out 6 months ago,

Might be worth stripping back brakes down and cleaning them up, i removed caliper and carrier, rattle shims and everything and cleaned them up. I filed pads down a little where they run on carrier as they were abit tight, it cured my squeek well for now anyway
