Gearbox Codes and correcting the V5

Featured Replies

Hey Folks

Taking a trip to the local DVLA office tomorrow to sort out the V5 for the Girlfriends Octavia.

The car is 8 years old, but the V5 says it's an auto, and that leads to an extra £70 on the tax....

I know the plate in the boot/service manual gives the build gearbox code, is there a list somewhere that states what the gearbox was if I know the code?

Thanks

Tom

OK

Finally made it out to the car, if I'm readying the vehicle data panel correctly, the gearbox code is FDB and the engine code ALH.

Can anyone confirm what gearbox type FDB is please?

Tom

It looks like gearbox code FDB is a 4 speed automatic.

Hmm, seems to be the case.

How can the gearbox code be wrong? For 8 years?!

ive got a similiar thing happening with my engine code- v5 states its asv.. sticker in boot states its ahf.. unfortunatly engine number on block is unreadable due to 10 years of rust.. so i dont know which one it is.. :(

simplest explanation is that it has had an engine transplant and dvla notified.

or a clerical error during registration or build.

or im being stupid and have completely missed something.. :S

You could try phoning a Skoda dealer and ask them to decode the VIN. I've just done that in my case, and like the V5 and the data plate it says Auto, but like me the guy said you just wouldn't buy an auto, then with in 80k have the gearbox change to manual.

Where abouts on the engine block is the code?

Also, anyone any idea where on the gearbox the code is for that?

cant really help on gearbox code- although i imagine there should be part numbers cast in the casing somewhere?

as for the engine number- crankcase web (where is meets the gearbox ) open the bonnet and its right in front of you (might have to remove engine cover to see it?)

thats one of the problems with pre-owned cars- apart from service history/ dealer history.. what was done on someones drive or in some backstreet garage will be a mystery.. :S

Having spoken to a helpful chap at a dealer I can confirm that the engine is easy, the gearbox however can be anywhere they fancy sticking it.

Good eh?

The first 6 years of the car are full Skoda dealer for everthing, spoken to that dealer, they know nothing about it. The year and a bit after that were done by the second owner, he made the conversion from DMF to SMF.

So on the grounds that to have a DMF that needed converting to SMF, it can't have been an auto, it's only got just over 80k traceable history, then I'm tending towards a balls up by Skoda and it has always been a manual.

OK, I've had a look and I can't see and engine code on the block. Well nothing that obvious or that says ALH, which is what it's meant to be.

The timing belt cover does say ALH, and on the front of the engine block there is a panel of numbers...

While I had the bonnet up I was going to have a quick look at the gear selection, first can sometimes be awkward. I was thinking of doing the index, thing, lock the shifter, release the springs, lock the gearbox, reset the springs. However I noticed that the gearbox actuator bit is completely different to mine, I couldn't see the little plastic key for locking the box and in the following pic, mine doesn't have the platic lump on top or the one in front from what I recall.

I then lifted the stick gator, and that's completely different...

And it doesn't have the locking hole like mine.

Now I grant you mines the 110 BHP model from 02, but was the 53 plate 90 BHP model, that different? Or has the gearbox on this car really been changed from auto to manual?

the engine code will be stamped into the crankcase web.. its not cast. where the engine bolts(mates) to the gearbox- someone on here must have a decent location picture? :S

When you say "web", do you mean the long fin that runs left to right just a smidgin lower than the oil pump, or do you mean the smooth contour of metal between the two bolts that hold the gearbox and engine together, runs up and down?

As you say, be a lot easier with a picture :) I might have to go out later and take some more photos.
