Breather pipes....

Featured Replies

I'm starting to go through all the pipework on my car as I'm not overly happy with it at the min so I've decided to limit the use of my car and get everything back upto scratch, now most of the pipework looks fine and fairly new although this little area has caught my eye.

This is the area in question.

Firstly the use of cable ties instead of clips caught my eye and then I noticed this hose looks slightly collapsed, although from the angle of the pic you can't really see.

Now I've removed the cable ties and took off those pipes and they look to be full of crap, are these common pipes that need replacing after a while??

yes mate thats ur crank oil breather pipe prone to split and do build up with oil over time. iv just replaced mine with an uprated pipe, looks like urs had split at some point an been repaired with pipe and tie wraps.

have a look at the link better than your standard pipe that will split after time and are around the same price from skoda http://www.viperperformance.co.uk/tabular.php?xscId=9784

Ah brilliant cheers for that :) at least its all common, I'll invest in some uprated pipes.

I've always thought that too tbh, if someone can post up what the pipework should look like I'd really appreciate it so I can finally get it right.

This is what mine looks like at the min.

Ive just replaced my breather hoses with the ones off ebay, creation motorsport selling,

I had to modify the lower pipe abit (cut it down) to make it fit right

Well things aren't going too great with this at the min, I purchased a creation motorsport uprated pipe which was a perfect fit, but when I was removing the old pipework I was greeted by a completely mullered looking lower pipe full of mayo, whoever messed about with my pipes needs shooting lol.

I rung Skoda today to see if I can purchase a pipe to replace that one thats fecked but we are having trouble finding the one I need.

Any way heres the new pipe fitted,

And heres the complete mess of a pipe I was greeted with last night.

If anyone can help with a part number for that lower pipe I'd really appreciate it lol, I think this weekend will be spent stripping down more pipes to see what else is buggered.

I've got one going spare. Only about a month old.

Does anyone know what causing all the crap and mayo thats in the breather system??

just found my invoice from VW. It's part number 06a103213bg and is £34.15 + VAT :'( I bought mine on 26/11/10 and it was on the car for about 2 months till I had my vac system all changed so I now run a catch can.

Does anyone know what causing all the crap and mayo thats in the breather system??

That's normal mate. Does your car do lots of short trips? A lot of people (me included) run our vac system with a catch can to catch all that crap.

At the moment it's not really in use while I sort issues out, so for the past few weeks its been doing short occasional trips with the odd good long distance run.

Is it expensive to get all the bits for a catch can?? I plan on keeping the car for a while now as I'm spending to sort it out.

You are probably looking at over £100 for a catch can and all the bits required to install it, i.e pipes, t piece, and clamps. Do you still want a pic of the part? PM me your email address and I can send you a pic.

Please if you don't mind, I'll look into a catch can, can't afford to yet for another month though.

That was my instant thought.

To the OP, Mine went and I replaced it with the Saikou oil catch can, £100 all together, easy fit and less muck going through the system. Sorted!

it looks like you have the T piece that sit under the manifold coming off yr rocker

this is how it should have looked

How does ur car boost with that pipe coming off the rocker cover?

The reason I ask is o have a split in the same pipe and the car doesn't boost too good.

If the hoses are in that much of a mess, you may aswell replace the whole system. I changed my breather system for the 3rd time the other day, and hopefully the last time!

I replaced all this, and added a Viper Y-hose:

For the plastic crank case vent tube you need a new o-ring and retaining clip. For the T-piece you need a new one-way valve. The rest just assembles with hose clips (preferably stainless). Oh and you may aswell change the PCV on the turbo inlet hose too.

As someone has already said, yours has had the T-piece (with valve housing) bodged into where the Y-hose should be.

The "mayo" will always be there, even with a catch can. As it's just the result of the oil/water/fuel vapour deposits from the crank case ventilation.

I had the Saikou Michi can fitted until recently too. 95% of what it catches is water. Since the catch can is aluminium, and it's mounted just behind the grille in the airflow, it acts as a good condenser. The standard pipework is short and hugs the engine, and is rubber/plastic. So most of the water vapour passes through the system, and back through the engine. The catch can condenses this vapour, giving the impression that you've caught loads of rubbish. In the summer (with high ambient temps) it catches virtually nothing, but in the winter it catches loads of water.

Well I think I'm going to follow the above advice and replace the whole unit as its looks more of a pain in the bum to change just the one bit.

Heres the old and new pipe together....as you can see there isn't much difference lol.

Hmm as rain has stopped play for me fitting this pipe and plus it looks an arse to do, I've now just ordered up 2 more silicone breather hoses plus a 5-piece turbo silicone hose kit as I'm better off uprated the lot I think, and I'm hoping that should make things a little bit better for the car.

Had a delivery today...

Just waiting on having the time to fit them all and going from there.
