Genuine from Skoda or Andrew Page?

Featured Replies

Just wondered what experiences people have had with non genuine parts? I had one done less than 10k ago and the garage used what they referred to as '..good as Skoda's'. Perhaps it's the pot holes, perhaps my driving, but the original lasted 35k and the non genuine 10k.

Any advice?

go for genuine, patent ones always seem to be hit or miss with things like wheel bearings

If you go the non genuine route items like SKF and FAG tend to be what OE is most of the time.

If you get stuff from pages just ask for decent stuff and not cheap crap, i got a front wheel bearing front pages and it was skf,

Just got some front discs and pads from them aswell and they were both bosch

Overtightened or not greased enough when fitted????

10K is very low for a wheel bearing - I would be asking for a replacement!!

My last car was a 4x4 and had done 150K when I sold it, still on original wheel bearings, and discs had been changed for the first time at approx 110K!!!!

Thanks for the advice. I'll pop down to Page's this week and see what they say. Andyvee, I'd rather not go back to the same garage again, so will take this one on the chin. I haven't fallen out with them, but I haven't been to impressed with their efforts the last couple of times.

Name and shame then ..... mostly so I don't end up going there myself! :giggle:

Got shamelessly cheap rear disks from there in the autumn. Time will tell whether or not they're pants.

skinnyman i'll drop you the pm tomorrow, theres nothing finer than genuine bits, but i work for skoda so i would say that i'll email you how much i can do you one posted, i've had non gen before and they've been garbage but dont get me wrong some are ok just generally they are cheap for a reason

I would always use genuine parts, for a little extra it saves having to do the job twice.

I totally agree. The garage I used sorted everything out before I could insist on genuine parts for the bearing. To be fair, they thought they were saving me money but I'd rather pay for the genuine once rather than non genuine twice.

I fitted a cheaper wheel bearing to my mk1 octy vrs from pages & it lasted 5k  However when i complained they gave me a more expensive version which was still ok when i sold the car 20k later. Pattern parts are normally ok.

I'm quite sure you'd not find them as they're a two man band down a back street in Scarborough. They were okay for a while, but have made a few mistakes over the years, mainly from not being cars nuts, but just blokes who own a garage. If they cared, they would have more sympathy with my requests. As it stands, they aren't into cars so don't see why I fuss so much about things being right.
