Yes.... if the water pump bearings fail and the belt becomes loose you could end up with the pistons hitting the valves.

hi there,my water pump went shortly after buying the car at 110k,the mechanic told me it would be wise to change the cam belt aswell...glad he did now,as i believe they should be done together.
