VRS - DSG - Any Good?

Featured Replies

Ok, have decided that I am having an Octavia VRS, but cant change until late this year/early next, typical as there is one local to me at a good price with all the toys.... but anyway!

I fancy an auto, which on the VRS I believe is a DSG gearbox, what are they like? Do they have flappy paddles for quick changes etc etc? Dont know anything about the DSG gearbox, so talk to me about it please :-)

James,

It's awesome.

Leave it in auto for a smooth drive; drop it into manual and flick the paddles for gear changes in milliseconds.......it even blips the throttle on the downshifts for you.

You can also override the full auto at any time just by flicking one of the paddles as well; it goes back to full auto if you then leave it for a short space of time.

Amazing gearbox, the DSG. Still enjoy manuals when driving work cars, but the DSG is the best of both worlds:

A very smooth 'auto' for heavy traffic situations ("Gridlock Britain" as I like to call it!), and very, very good in Sport or on the paddles when you want to push on!

You won't regret it, and you'll get the multi-function steering wheel thrown in for free!!

I love it - it's the first car I've ever kept long enough to pay for, and that's saying something

Its really good most of the time. On the really odd occasion thou I curse it ie when you want to get into a gap on a roundabout, rolling in at 10mph-ish and the gearbox decides 3rd at 1000 rpm is best with 4th gear preselected, when what you really needed was 2nd now. But that really is the odd occasion. The rest of the time its great, wouldn’t be without it

My first DSG. It is brilliant. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I flip the paddle into 3rd on roundabouts or even 2nd on smaller ones and the kickdown is still lurking there if you need it even on manual. Fantastic gearbox, best option in terms of value for money.

I've found the DSG box to be fantastic, its nearly as good as Audi's Multitronic. That would never be caught out at roundaboutsemoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

Oh here i chime in as well.

See my comment "her be a hoot" with specific reference to the performance of the DSG in respect of overtaking (despite my somewhat limited diesel HP)

I have not as yet noticed any hiccups (inappropriate gears) at roundabouts either??

However

A bit of a nuisence regarding the whole bloody proper sequence to stop & extract the key from the ignition mind.Grrrrr.

Unlike my smooth slick performance in a manual gearbox car.

Yes true I always fumble with that too but can you imagine how utterly unslick the performance would be on getting in and starting the engine enthusiastically on a car with a gearbox that has a mind of its own like the DSG? A car with a manual gearbox has a clutch and I am guessing you probably always used to depress the clutch when starting it up? The interlock is there for a good reason but as I say I fumble with it on getting out every time . . .

the DSG is an amazing box, i prefer and drive a manual, but i get to use the DSG boxes quite a lot at work :)

did notice though for some reason having a DSG gearbox makes the car produce more co2, which pushes it into the next tax bracket! weird! lol

All interesting, and sounds like its the way to go!

I have always had manuals myself, but used my parents car a couple of weeks ago (an old persons merc!!) which is an auto and just loved how easy it was to drive, how you can be lazy and just steer the car and not worry about anything else, but I would miss not having some sort of manual control when I wanted it, so it seems the DSG VRS is a good solution? Would I be right i.e. auto for when you want to be lazy but use the flappy paddles when you want some control and enthusiastic driving or something? What do you get on the multi function steering wheel then???

Thanks for all the comments, just really frustrated that the car I want with all the toys is in my local Skoda dealer at a price that I want, with DSG plus a load of factory extras etc at an age that I want and I just cant have it yet...! If it was 6/7 months down the line then I could afford to run it for a couple of months whilst I waited for the lease on my other car to finish, but hey ho!! There will be others I expect....!!!

Best bet is to go & test drive one emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Yep,

I do understand the need for safety interlocks and again

Yep I always start with my foot on the clutch (where fitted)

However if i remember correctly the Wifes Steyr Daimler Puch allows on to extract the key from the ignition with the auto box in neutral.Which is fine. And one can move it back & forward without having ones foot on the brake forby.

Simples

******************

I always snick the DSG to neutral when stopped, then have to remember to put my foot on the brake to get it into Park and recycle the key back & forrard before removing, if exiting the vehicle.

Why is it deemed necessary to put her in Park, cos one needs to be ABSOLUTLY stopped first.

Or rather why the heck did they fit a parking brake as well (which I always use)

GErrrrr

again

+1 on the awesomeness!

It isn't an Auto though!! It is an electronic Dual Clutch muti shaft manual

Shows what you know, there is a 2nd car salesman on HUKD who aays it's just an ordinary auto.

I bet he knows more about Skodas and DSG boxes than you.

He's been in the trade over 20years you know.....illegally selling 2nd hand cars from his home and also with no business insurance. :wonder:

I'd assumed that was because the DSG is heavier than the manual and also you're spinning an extra gearbox to be ready for the change. Both of these must use a little bit more energy.

Don't have one myself, but just 9 days until that changes ;-)

Hi newbie,

Time to shift it over to manual mode (+/-) then. you can do this whilst moving & it will stay in selected gear (1-6) until you change up (or down) or it hits the rev limiter, then dsg takes over. Only had mine five days though. enjoy.

Rev limiter? Never been near there. I start feeling guilty when I can hear the engine !
