Sat Nav question

Save yourself the money and buy yourself a decent Tom Tom or Garmin. The Amundsen Sat Nav is pretty slick but its still very expensive and doesnt do full postcode searches etc. You'll also have to keep going back to the dealer to get the mapping updated which will cost a fortune.

I think the mapping is UK and Europe to answer your question though.

Yes that would look nice on the windscreen of his new car.the New Columbus is very good touch screen full post codes and speed camaras and as for upgrades they can be found for free on the net or from friends on the forum.

Like the sarcasm, very helpful..... :smirk:

I was not trying to be sarcastic just giving the correct information about the Columbus you said it wasn't very good in fact its a very good sat-nav and it does have full post codes you where giving the wrong information to the other member i was just trying to give him the right imformation so he could make the choice with the correct imformation.

I have the Admunsen unit and it came with a map of Uk and Ireland and 'important roads of europe'.

I think its a good unit, it enhances the radio by turning it into a touch screen model and with the VAT off the price comes down to £ 400, which is pretty good for a built in sat nav system.

Not sure how much a full europe map is but am sure you can get it off ebay or something cheaper than the dealer.

If you want a decent integrated unit that also makes the interior of the car look very nice then get it.

If not go for a tom tom (nothing wrong with tom toms we have 2 of them prior to this unit in the Fabia).

Hope this helps

Correction, Columbus (RNS-510) is not available as a factory fit option on the Fabia, only the Amundsen (or RNS-310 in VAG-speak), same as whats available on the Polo It's a good unit but it doesnt do full postcode searches as far as I am aware whereas the Columbus does.

Yes the Columbus is a good unit, very good but also extremely expensive. I know someone on here has retro-fitted one to their vRS, fair shout but unless you have money to burn whats the point. They dont really navigate any better than a Tom Tom/Garmin, they just look nicer and offer better in car integration. That's fine until the unit is 3-4 years old, has been discontinued and becomes old hat. At least with a portable unit you can bin it, buy a new one at low costs and keep up with the technology. I have a Tom Tom One IQ routes in my MK6 Golf, cost me just over 100 quid it gets me everywhere I need to go and when I'm not using it, away in the glovebox it goes. Easy as that.

Thanks all, I think my questions have been answered and its good to see some healthy debate.

As its a company car so cost doesn't really come in to it, i'll find the price of the full Europe maps from the Skoda stealer.

I think I've been spoilt with the nav in my BMW, with its full google maps integration :-(

Cheers

Can anyone who owns an Amundsen Sat Nav confirm it doesn't do full UK postcode searches? Our dealer said it did?

Rob I'll confirm tomorrow. So far when using it it's found things via town or street but will check if I can enter via postcode.

Hi there

I was going to order an Amundsen sat nav but skoda customer services told me that it does not accept full post codes.

If money is no object go for a Pioneer F9210BT

The Amundsen does not take full post codes at the moment however I believe there is a new cd available for it that will enable it to. It is worth discussing with the dealer.

You can retrofit the columbus for less than the factory order sat nav and get full post code search

Just checked in autocar mag from the 9th feb and they got a 'version 7 sat nav disc' from their dealer to upgrade the unit to take full post codes. However, this was in a yeti so probably isn't an Amundsen.

To confirm the Amundsen does not offer post code address's.

Tried quite a few places i know by street and all came up quick.

Works fine for me and as previously posted a fully fitted sat nav which enhances the radio for £ 400 is not bad.

How come you're swapping the 1 series for a Fabia vRS? I'd really like a 123d M Sport but the poor rear legroom, boot and price put me off. Bit of a BM head, my Dad's had a few over the years, E46 330ci Sport convertible, E46 M3 Coupe, E92 335d M Sport coupe and the last was a E81 135i M Sport coupe. The M3 and the 135i were serious pieces of kit!

Thanks, good to confirm that. Something to think about but i'll probably keep it. Not sure i'm up to installing a columbus and my work car park is in a pretty dodgy area, don't fancy anyone thinking I have a tom tom in the glove box.

Its a company car and now due to go back in July this year. I had an left ankle operation last year, and my left knee gives me grief every now and again, so Doc has advised an auto.

My last 2 cars have been BM's and i love them, so i've decided to choose something quick and with an auto, and I love the VAG DSG, and most importantly cheap on our car scheme.... the Fabia vRS fits the bill perfectly, thus reducing my cax tax, and I get cash back cuz I aint spent all of my car allowance. This give me spare cash to buy a weekeend toy. Yeah I'd quite like an E46 M3 or maybe the E81 135, but I also like the VAG 3.2 DSG so may have a look at TT's or an R32.

I just hope i like the Fabia when my demonstator arrives on Wednesday, otherwise its back to the drawing board! Colour combinations are also a knightmare, just can't decide lol

Hi there, I own the Amundsen Satnav and can confirm it doesn't do postcodes, whilst I was initially a bit miffed about this the search function seems to be so good on it that you can identify where you want to be going very quickly anyway, perhaps adding a few seconds onto the task, which I'm ok with. If you don't have any other address details, just the postcode, then you may struggle.

If you have any other optional features installed in your car then I'd recommend the Amundsen because of the integration with the Phone, MDI, On screen reversing sensor information as well as the TMC information that it gets from the radio. I think it's a nice unit, its really the heart and soul of the car to me, and the built-in-non-thief-magnet aspect of it means I don't have to take it with me whenever I leave the car parked. The postcode thing is turning out to be a real non-problem.

Hi ukdiceman,

I know this is a Skoda forum but I cant help but feel that you might be better off with a 5 door Polo GTi. To a private buyer they are alot of money so completely understand why the Fabia vRS is so popular but as its a company vehicle it would be a great compromise. Still loads cheaper than the BM, but you retain that premium feel that the Skoda is all honesty cant compete with whilst mechanically its pretty much the same. I suggest having a drive and seeing what you think. I would have liked one but didnt want to stump up £19k also went vRS estate as we needed a bigger boot. Well worth a look I think.

Thanks for your view Pipsyp, and I agree, the Polo GTi is 2nd on my list and i do prefer its looks. But one of the main reasons to "trade down" is to release some cash for a weekend toy, the Fabia vRS is a steal on our car scheme. Roll on wednesday :D

Fair shout. I did think given that the Polo's residual values are likely to be significantly better than the vRS's that there probably wouldnt be alot in it in terms of monthly cost, dont know for certain though. Let us know how you get on. I really like the vRS myself, alot of metal for £15k but its going to be the wifes car doubling up a bit of weekend fun for me. I drive a MK6 Golf GT 2.0 TDi myself and knowing what the 1 series is like I think you'll probably find it a bit plasticy, I did. That said it is well bolted together.

Its £55 a month cheaper to lease than the Polo GTi.

Yes I'll report back on my demo, i hope it has the sat nav fitted so i can compare that too.
