Summer tyres for the Fabia

Featured Replies

Looking for new summer tyres for the fabia. it had 3 firestones and one sunny on it before the winter and the handling wasn't great. I had assumed it was the car, but the winter continentals proved me wrong, much much better handling. So i'm thinking of replacing with conti, Goodyear, Michelin if the price is good. It currently has 165/70/14, but I may change to 185/65/14 ~ online calculators show it's only 1.5% bigger, prices are similar.

So a couple of questions. Which tyres would you recommend for these sizes? Would you go to the bigger size? Will the bigger size be ok the existing rim?

Thanks in advance

185/60/14 would be the size you should go for as long as they would be okay on your rims (someone here will definatly be able to answer that). I don't see why they wouldn't. 185/60/14 would keep the rolling circumferance as close as possible to your current wheels+tires (well they will have a 3.5mm smaller profile, but thats better than a 5.25mm increase that you would get with the 185/65)

The tires i had on mine were 185/60/14, but mine has a different engine so not entierly sure if it has wider rims as a result.

Cheers. The online calcs show the 65 is 1.5% bigger and the 60 is 1.5% smaller, so would prefer the comfort!!!

185/60/14 is a standard size used by Skoda on the Fabia whereas they never used 185/65/14 so your insurance company may view it as a modification. I think 185/60/14 is a pretty common size so you might find there's more choice and cheaper prices for this size. As for tyre choice, my old 1.9TDI had 185/60/14 michelin energy tyres on - they were great for economy but didn't give much confidence on the road. I got a set of 16" alloys with 205/45/16 tyres and the difference was night and day. Just a thought, but you might be able to pick up some nice 15" alloys with decent tyres cheaper than four new tyres then you could keep your winter tyres on the steel rims ready to swap over.

Never even considered what the 'stock' sizes were.

Cheers for that

The stock sizes for 14'' wheels on a Fabia are:

165/70/14 where fitted to 14'' steels with a 5j wide rim,

185/60/14 where fitted to 14'' steels with a 6j wide rim.

More info here as to the maximum width tyre you could get away with

Cheers chris.

That answers the compatibilty question, it's possible, but would be better with bigger rims. Might try the local scrappy

Any more thoughts on brands of tyre?

I like my UniRoyal Rainsport2s! Or Falken 912's, they seemed pretty decent for the price. Don't get Dunlop! Loud and uncomfy, with not much grip. All in opinion of course.

I would suggest Vredestein Hi-Tracs (if you can get them) as they did very well in AutoExpress when they tested 14" tyres (185/60 14). If not I'd possibly try UniRoyal RainExperts as they seam to be getting good reviews.
