Axle Tramp

Featured Replies

Had a spot of Axle Tramping tonight, jeezo that was violent! Never experienced it like that before. Felt like it was enough to smash a window (it didn't! thankfully :giggle: ) Can't ever recall getting anything like that before, although i don't tend to put my foot to the floor so soon in a low gear.

Anyone else experienced really violent axle tramp with our beleoved Octy's ? Makes a strong case for fitting an anti lift kit :giggle:

Forgive my ignorance, but what is axle tramping?

sorry no idea what ur on about!!

Axle tramping is caused by leaf springs winding up isn't ? Maybe your Octy has different options to mine . . .

If you do get that sort of vibration on hard acceleration from standstill then I would suspect that a.) you must have amazing tyres cos mine would just slip or b.) the ESP is taking control or c.) there is something else loose in the drivetrain.

This is axle tramp described for a BMW M5- http://paultan.org/2007/01/31/axle-tramp-bane-to-manual-e60-bmw-m5-fun/

Very hard acceleration, on crap tyres on a damp road. The front offside wheel slammed itself violently into the ground about 6 times in the second I had my foot to the floor. The whole body shell shook so violently, and the noise it made inside the car sounded like it was being amplified by the windows.

Lesson learned :giggle:

My diesel VRs is fitted with Kumho tyres on the front and that tramps likes mad, especially in the damp.

Very annoying when all you want to do is accelerate away quickly etc.

Not sure if it is the tyres or the traction control being too sensitive and cutting power on /off.

I've had it on an uphill pull-away with crap tyres in the Leon. Doesn't half make a bang.

Isn't it the dog bone mounts that cause this?

Probably. In my case it was 'being too harsh on the accelerator'.

You don't need leaf springs to get axle tramp. Its caused by the an oscillating 'grip-slip-grip-slip' of the wheel and results in the wheel bouncing due to the stored energy in the spring.

My car does this too on a damp road and its made much worse by the traction control. As soon as the wheel starts to slip the TC cuts power and allows it to grip again (with a 'thud'), then as the power comes back in again the wheel starts to slip again and the TC cuts back in - and so the cycle repeats itself. The only solution is to ease back on the throttle ;)

It's either a fault with the vehicle or grossly inadequate driving skills. If you were driving according to the road conditions and surface, within the limitations of your vehicle, within your own capabilities, etc. then it must be the vehicle that's at fault, and if it reacted as violently as you describe, which must be hugely disappointing for a 10 plated vRS, then your responsibility surely is to return it to the supplying dealer immediately for closer inspection under warranty as obviously with this fault it could be dangerous to both yourself and other road users. Please keep us updated on the outcome of your visit.

Congratulations aixlad. You are the first person in my year of Briskoda i've felt anything less than warm friendship for. To be clear, It was the pretend stupidity rather than the smugness that did it for me. Valid points let down by a dishonest presentation. Duly blocked, lifes too short and all that

Cheers to everyone else for the constructive comments you all made

Well that is a very good discription of what axel tramp is but the BMW is rear wheel drive.

A Skoda has not got an axel so it wasnt axel tramp that you felt but as said buy someone else too much power and the traction kicking in causing the suspension to thud.

The cause of it is the engine mounts. When the wheels brake grip, the TCS cuts power which jolts the engine, then power kicks back in jolting the engine and making the wheels skip again. The engine mounts are really sloppy, get someone to rev the engine on and off whilst you have a look at the engine. Its quite scary how much it rocks.

Install a lower engine mount and you will practically eliminate the axle tramp. Cheap mod @ about £60 THS FR3 lower engine torque mount

a cheaper but much less effective option would be the torque arm inserts, but i had one fitted and it made very little difference

Like the idea of those THS mounts

Been reading up on different stuff and one of the other possibles is worn out shocks. Mine pass the bounce test pretty convincingly but I could pretty much swear they're not as effective as they were new 10.5k miles back and even at new they felt good, but only just if that makes sense - they felt like they were at the limits of their abilities when new.

Keep an eye on the MK5 GTi forum as there is an imminent group buy on the full set for under 200 quid, I WILL be investing.

Thought that went out with Morris Marina's

If anyone wants to see axle tramp in action, I think, IIRC, Steve McQueen demonstrates in his Mustang in the Bullit chase scene.

I believe it's something that happens when you don't know how to drive. I could be wrong.

So, let's get this clear, 'knowingly' not a fault with the vehicle it must surely be a fault of the other one I mentioned.

Interesting :)

Would the WALK also assist in keeping the described symptoms at bay? Suppose that would be more valid if the car had steering lock on when the axle tramping/hop occurred?

I suppose a WALK would help, but I would sooner drive!!!

Seriously, got no idea mate.

Sorry Mute, but it's really not in the spirit of the forum to take offence simply because you disagree with a response! Looking at your original posting, my understanding is that your vehicle may have had a serious malfunction which, of course, is of great interest to all the fanatics on here. If you purposely made your vehicle react in this manner then it's only fair that you should state this at the outset.

walk wouldnt help much in all honesty, it applies more castor which will add weight to the steering, inprove the turn in grip as a result of the castor(which gives the effect of dynamic camber when cornering). the rock and vibration comes from the engine as it jolts back and forth as the TCS cuts the power in and out whilst trying to get grip. Its a very common problem accross the whole VAG brand.

Please keep on topic and don't start winding each other up or this topic will come to a very sudden stop.
