Axle Tramp

I was calling it Axle Tramp but was speaking to a guy today who knows wayyyyy more about the nuts, bolts and oily end of motorsport than is healthy :giggle: it's wheel hop it's called on independent suspension.

Would the WALK also assist in keeping the described symptoms at bay?

I'm not sure, the white paper that whiteline published for their ALK says it makes the front suspension softer, but they reckon this causes the load across both tyres to even out better. Doesn't make sense to me so i'm missing something - if you lift weight off the driven wheels during acceleration surely there would be less grip not more.

some good reviews of the mounts in

Those posts are interesting, i had it in my mind those dogbone mount inserts would be quite effective but i guess not - that guy was running one beforehand. Good feedback.

This sure surprised me the first time it happened on my 1.8Tsi, it really is very violent. Frightened the missus to death! Worst seems to be a damp road, turning out of a junction - ie wheels not pointing straight ahead and needing to accelerate quickly to match traffic speed. Thanks to janner_Sy, I reckon he has definitely identified the cause.

I'm now aware it happens, so I don't provoke it into happening. A side effect of fwd, bigger car, fair bit of power and inadequate engine mounts by the sound of it. I wonder if Skoda will do a recall for engine mounts? This is bad enough for the manufacturer to do something, especially as the cause is now known.

You just need to learn how to feed the power in. Not too difficult, and you will get the hang of it eventually :)

No problem with my car though :)

+1 I concur with this solution to Axle Tramp problems. 99% driver. 1% car design.

As previously stated, originally applied to live rear axles and leaf springs, as found on Escort, Capri, etc.

ps - must re-run Bullit car chase to watch for McQueen's axle tramp demo

Due to a reduction in horsepower and the addition of a second set of driven wheels Len? ;)
