New Brake Pads

Featured Replies

So my brake wear warning light has come on and its time to get some new pads on my car before my MOT in a couple of weeks. I have tried searching the forum but could not find a guide.

I have an 07 MKII Octy VRS.

My questions are..

1) Where is the best place I can buy the pads from?

and

2) Does anyone have a guide on how to fit these yourself. Is it easy? If it's not to difficult I would like to fit them myself instead of a dealer.

Many Thanks

I do indeed. It's very early. Please forgive me haha :)

I get my brake pads off E-Bay, front pads £12.00, rear pads around £11.00 a set. Rear discs and pad set £28.90.

Easy job to complete, very simple with minimum amount of tools, for the DIY person.

Usually buying from Skoda dealer, the pads will also have new fitting bolts and anti-squeal shims as well. (unlike E-Bay not included)

Plenty of info on this site, or just ask, members very helpful I have found.

Good Luck.

I tend to buy my parts from VW Spares its around £57 for front and rear pads delivered they are TRW, really easy to fit for the rears you will need a caliper wind back tool around £15 probably could be had cheaper elsewhere.

My local indi charged me 20 quid labour to change the front pads...so u can source the best ones and ask them to fit..

Hmm there seems to be alot of different sizes. Is there an easy way to check which size my car has?

Cant be different sizes

Fronts are 312mm disc size rears are 288mm

Asuming you get TRW pads part number is

TRW FRONT GDB1550

TRW REAR GDB1622

When Dealer and Independent garage want around about £150 - £200 to fit front and rear pads when I can get the parts online for £40ish then yes I would like to work on my cars braking system.

The best 'guide' would be the Skoda ElsaWin manual (discs available on Ebay) - however it would assume a good level of mechanical competence.

Do you have a friend or relative who is mechanically-minded and can assist you? The fronts are pretty easy, the back are not too bad, but you do need the piston wind-back tool and the handbrake cable levers do need setting properly at the correct gap.

Get a Haynes Manual from your local library (it's free copmpared to £20 to purchase)and there is a simple guide in it. I get brake pads from www.eurocarparts.co.uk.

What I have found when working on VW cars is that you need a specific type of caliper piston wind back tool, you can't push the piston back, they need to be wound back, the tool is about £33 (Laser Left Hand Thread Brake Caliper Rewind Tool). You need to make sure you get the right one as some cars have a Right Hand Thread, you even find some cars have a left hand thread for example for the front and a right hyand thread for the back! In which case you are looking at £75 for the tools.

If you are keeping the car for a while and intend on changing brakes again in the future or doing all your own servicing, it may be cheaper to go the a Skoda Dealer, Skoda Specialist or the likes of Kwik Fit.

slightly OT but - there's a brake warning light on the VRS?! Is this on all cars or was it introduced from a certain point onwards?

Yes it is similar to this but without the exclamation mark.

Im all for people saving money & having a go themselves, however your braking system is a saftey item & if you dont know what your doing you could endanger yourself, your family who may travel in the car & other road users. If your confident you know what your doing then thats fine,im a mechanic but i wouldnt try fixing my boiler in my house when it goes wrong,i have to pay my plumber.

If your garage is quoting £150 to £200 in labour only then you need to find another garage as thats way to much,if that includes parts then thats a good price!.
