Engine / Air con running after engine is turned off? Octavia vrs tdi

Featured Replies

Hello All.

I've noticed this evening for the first time, my octavia vrs 2.0 tdi CR 170 (only had it 3 weeks), when I turned the ignition off, that it was still in effect running.

To date, everytime I've turned the car off after long & short journeys, that's it, it stops but this evening it sounded like the engine was ticking over.

It stayed on for 5-10minutes before turning off. It's not just a quiet tick over, sounds like some loud fans.

Does anyone know what this is? Is it something to do with air-con? It's quite loud that's for sure. Not something I'd welcome coming home really late at night.

I've had a seat leon tdi for a few years and it never did this

Any thoughts?

Cheers.

It won't be the air con as that will turn off with the engine, it will most likely be the engine cooling fans which could keep running for a while after you switch the engine off as they are controlled by a thermostat independant of the engine. Keep an eye on it but as long as they turn off after a few minutes and don't flatten the battery then you will be fine.

Thanks countryboy. I've found a few other sites mention this on google since my post. I just couldn't find it in the search on this site.

Seems like many cars do this. Not sure why my old PD 1.9 didn't suffer, but in either case it does seem to be normal.

Thanks for response, good to know that it is normal under certain conditions.

The DPF will be in the middle of a regen when you switch it off and the fans stop on to cool the exhaust system down. Nothing to worry about.

Today was the first time since buying my car I noticed this along with a noticible feeling of heat coming from under the car. It has happened twice today.. Funny as I gave it a bit of a driving over the past 2 days, thought that would do the dpf good.
