The vRS spoiler - does it do anything?

Featured Replies

Not wanting to start any kind of controvery here, but I was following a Vrs yesterday (Silver '03 -Hitchin Road, Luton -was it you?), and I was wondering if the rear spoiler actually has any aerodynamic affect -or is it just for show? It's so tucked down into the curve of tailgate that I don't see how much air will get around it.

Has anyone ever tried to measure it's affect?

Just wondering......

mines not there!! its stuck on top of the tail gate :)

but then it is a hearse :D

i have always assumed they are for show - certainly when driving at legal speeds

The milotec one certainly has an effect, Diho noticed a difference on the 'ring and Paul's cracked the paint along the rear of the edges, thus proving there was some "force" applied...

The standard one I suspect does little but collect water?

IIRC, from the Fluid Flow part of my degree (a few years ago now... ;) ) the spoilers on almost all road cars do not produce appreciable downforce (like in Formula 1 cars), but what they do do is improve the drag coefficient of the car by reducing air turbulence at the back end. They also look 'sporty' of course. Therefore, some sort of 'lip' spoiler or similar is fitted even on ordinary cars, partly for styling purposes and partly to help fuel economy at higher speeds (by the same token, they probably add a couple of mph to the top speed, but certainly no more than that). Therefore the 'extended' spoiler on the performance versions of most cars is mostly just there for show (as you suspected!)

Adds stability at 120+, I can notice the difference on mine (with no spoiler) at thiose speeds compared to the RS

AHA!

Evidence obtained from real life experimentation is always the best......

saves denting the boot on the garage roof when you open it inside the garage

 more likely the front bumper and more air going underneath has made a difference.

I can sell you a genuine WRC spoiler! PM me!

120+   In a Taxi. Was your fare in a hurry? ;)

Ian, It has the same ride height that my RS had, so not sure

I suppose it would need a wind tunnel to prove it.

Or a narrow alley, a couple of heavy smokers and big fan :D

I'm not exactly light, I smoke and I lurrrrrve pies. Will I do? :D

I was thinking more about the bumper shape, is much more "boaty" and flows more air under than the RS bumper..

Eat a couple of Ginster's Mince and Onion, and we won't need the fan either......
