Clutch or gearbox?

Featured Replies

hi all third topic in five minutes skodas eh? i was driving home yesterday from work everything was normal going in and out of gear with no slip of th clutch and suddenly as i pulled out of junction nice and steady then BANG!! i had no drive but would still go in gear but all i got was a scratching noise metal on metal which i assumed was the clutch gone but my question is should i be able to put it in gear with the clutch gone or is it the gearbox? when its in gear i can hear engine is laboured and i get a loud beep from the dash at the same time and the beep stops i when i take it out of gear the engine runs fine but im not sure which it is thats gone please help??

many thanks in advance.

sounds like it could be Diff related (ie pop goes the weasel). being honest though unless you take it to bits you'll not know for sure

Sounds like the clutch center plate has collapsed. Could also be clutch release bearing.

funny enough i had a quiet groan from the g/box and when i pressed the clutch down it goes so could be the release bearing then but just like to make sure cheers

Clutch release bearings are noisy when clutch is pressed, and go quiet when clutch released. Sounds like your first motion shaft bearings in the gearbox have given up.

Scrap yard would be your best bet, go armed with gearbox part number, as various VW Polo ans SEAT models used the same box. If you find a gearbox, push and pull on the first motion shaft, there should be minimal endfloat. Also rock the shaft side to side, about 1.6mm play is acceptable.

Yes good bet it's eaten the clutch. They sometimes literally explode. Gearbox may be ok, a failing clutch can make a fair old racket.
