Odd vibration/noise.

Featured Replies

My car seems to be developing a personality?!

Recently it's started making a light, thrummy vibrating sort of noise. Only really noticable at idle or fast idling with no load (when it's worse). Car starts and seems to go as per normal, though I'm obviously not flooring it everywhere.

Noise seems to appear only when the car is warm. I first noticed it just before switching off after a long motorway journey.

I've checked that it's got oil and water.

There's no CEL or other apparent indicator of doom.

D'oh! Forgot the 2nd question: Is there any way of revving the engine from under the bonnet? These modern diesel fangled things don't have cables, throttle plates and spring to play with.

Does the noise change or go away when you press the clutch? Slight rumble in the 1st motion shaft bearings in the gearbox is quite common. Other than that, alternator pulley clutch, aircon low on gas and oil.

Reving from under bonnet, two ways. VAGCOM with a long cable  or able assistant capable of understanding the command phrase "Rev it" No correlation to frogs BTW

I forgot that bit, yeah, I tried it clutch down, clutch up, makes no difference. I'll have a nose about the underbonnet tomorrow.

Last car had a wierd noise was an AX GT making "rushing, sucking" noises. Went away when I leaned on the airbox/carb to tweak the throttle. The carb top plate screws were all gradually unwinding.
