Correct engine oil grade 02 1.8t 4x4

Featured Replies

Hello,

i bought a service kit for my 02 1.8T 4x4 estate this morning from my local TPS, they sent me Quantum platinum 5W-40 oil. i had been expecting their synta 5W-30 oil. can any one confirm if the 5w 40 is the right oil or would i be better putting 5w-30 in! always dubious of putting the wrong grade oil in any car with a turbo!!!

thanks

Chris

5w 30 i would say i certainly won't put anything else in mine

5W 40 full syn is the correct grade as thats what I put in mine recently in an oil change after doing a lot of checking, you can use 5w 30 though and I read that the 10w 40 semi syn causes the sludge issue.

It depends. Have a search around.

There are 2 different service intervals. 5w30 longlife is required if you are using the variable intervals (high annual mileage), but if you plan to change oil every 5k or so, 5w40 platinum is perfect!

The main thing is it needs to meet the VW502.00 standard, which quantum platinum does. If you are going variable longlife, it needs to meet the 504.00 standard.

Confuing stuff

As Danboy said, DON'T use 10w40 semi syn, the turbo runs way too hot for it and can cause sludge problems.

Was told by my dealer that 5w40 has replaced 5w30 and that all the petrol engined cars use it apart from long life.
